According to WTNH.

(WTNH) - Connecticut Attorney general Richard Blumenthal is ready to jump into the race for U.S. Senate.

Blumenthal has scheduled a Noon news conference to announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for US Senate.

Incumbent Senator Chris Dodd is expected to announce today he will not seek re-election.

"I admire and respect Senator Dodd's decades of service to the people and state of Connecticut," Blumenthal told WTNH this morning. "He deserves gratitude for that service.

"I plan to hold a press conference, at noon today at Democratic headquarters, to announce that I will be a candidate for the Senate."

There is already another Democrat in the race. Merrick Alpert has been in the race for months, but has not raised much money. There has been no statement from him yet about Sen. Dodd's decision.

UPDATE: Blumenthal's press conference has been moved to 2:30 today.

That's it, everybody go home. (4.00 / 1)
Game over. Congratulations Senator-elect Blumenthal. :-)

NRSC press release on Blumenthal (0.00 / 0)
they sound kinda desperate to link Blumenthal to Dodd...

TPM LiveWire: In Dodd Statement, NRSC Attacks CT AG Blumenthal

PPP numbers- big lead for Blumenthal (4.00 / 1)
PPP: Blumenthal Heavily Favored

When Chris Dodd retired last night his seat went from one of the most vulnerable to one of the safest for Senate Democrats. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal leads all three of the Republicans in the race by at least 30 points in polling we conducted Monday and Tuesday night before Dodd's announcement. (emphasis added)

Blumenthal is unusually popular, especially in hyper partisan times when voters like few politicians. 59% have a favorable opinion of him to just 19% who see him negatively. It's no surprise that he's liked by 71% of Democrats and 60% of independents, but even Republicans view him favorably by a 37/35 margin. It doesn't take a lot of hands to count the number of Democratic politicians with positive numbers among GOP voters these days.

Blumenthal leads Rob Simmons 59-28, Linda McMahon 60-28, and Peter Schiff 63-23. It would take an epic collapse for him not to be Connecticut's next Senator.

Look at the numbers... (0.00 / 0)
Sen. Dodd only barely loses to Simmons (4 point gap - gotta be within the margin of error?), ties McMahon and beats Schiff by 7.

And Rep. Murphy beats them all too.

But in this day of polarized and partisan politics... Blumenthal's numbers are off the charts.

As Bill Paxton said in Aliens... (4.00 / 1)
"GAME OVER MAN!!!  GAME OVER!!!"

Have you seen the PPP results yet?  He decimates the field.  If he runs a solid campaign and avoids gaffes, Democrats can breathe easily.

hey (4.00 / 1)
My name is also Ken B!

Though I have to say my spidey sense is tingling, in that I seem to remember a lot of Hillary surrogates touting the inevitability line around this time of year in 2007. Obviously this is a different ballgame, but I for one don't think it would be a bad idea if a progressive were to run in the primary, even if only to get Blumenthal to commit to some solid policy positions on the record.
