Senate passes health care bill

by: ctblogger

Thu Dec 24, 2009 at 11:47:24 AM EST

This morning, by a vote of 60 to 39, the Senate finally passed their version of health care reform.

The House passed a more progressive form of health care reform with a public option and the two bills will need to be merged in conference committee before a final vote.

After the early morning vote, Senator Dodd addressed the media...

Yesterday, Senator Dodd held a conference call with reporters where he answered questions regarding the next steps in the health care reform process.

Dodd (0.00 / 0)
As we all see, DOdd is front and center on this and to the extent the public likes  the final result...expect a slight uptick in his numbers. It is obvious that Dodd will be a leader in the Conference Committee to  add additional sweeteners  to the bill in order  to make it more palatable to progressives,if it can satisfy most progressives.Next year on to reconciliation for the public option and medicare buyin?

But look at the snark from CT News Junkie's Christine Stuart (0.00 / 0)

Christine Stuart penned an article on her website titled "Dodd Heckled While Touting Health Care Bill's Passage".  She attended the Bradley Airport press conference and for her a sole snotty comment from a passerby was the real story of the day.  Here's my comment there:

Wait a minute, Christine.  You wrote, "a few people stopped and offered congratulations, Dodd said. "One fellow said, 'I disagree with you.."

So one person, maybe two, said they disagreed with Dodd on the health care bill.  But your headline is "Dodd Heckled While Touting Health Care Bill's Passage"?  Really?

Let me get this straight: Chris Dodd serves as the principal leader in the United States Senate and succeeds in passing the most important piece of social legislation in forty years, one that will transform America's health care system, and you think the most important part of this story is that one guy makes a snarky comment at the airport?  Did you really just do that?

No question where your sentiments are, eh, Christine?  No attempt to grasp the enormity of this achievement, or to express the place in American history that Chris Dodd has just earned himself.  No, the important thing here is some guy making a snotty remark in passing in the airport.

This is truly sad.

And the article includes a subtitle: "$100 Million In Pork?", echoing the right-wing echo chamber's take on the provision Dodd included that might help rebuild a hospital in Connecticut.  Apparently Ms. Stuart is completely unaware that Connecticut has ranked second to last of the fifty states for years in the federal dollars it receives compared with the tax dollars it pays out to Washington.  Last time I calculated it, the deficit with Washington, D.C. equated to 7% of gross state product.  The Republicans have been hoovering up federal dollars for their Sunbelt constituencies for years, while starving New England and other Democratic states.  So we should object now that Connecticut might finally get some much needed attention and assistance from Washington?  I don't think so.  Rather than parrot the Right's talking points, this state's press corps should be setting off fireworks in celebration that our economy might finally be treated with the equanimity that it has deserved.

But apparently it's all about "getting" Dodd.

Dodd... (0.00 / 0)

blah, blah blah.... I am giving the so called "working mans party", one more chance to give the people a decent health care bill, in conference. If they don't deliver (and I'll be shocked if they do) I am resigning from the Democratic Party.

While I know this won't matter at all to the party, it will sure matter to me.

But let justice roll down like waters...Amos 5:24a

Dood Complains about behavior in Senate (0.00 / 0)
Dodd needs to realize the optics of him complaining about the behavior of new members just makes him sound like a Washington insider.

http://thehill.com/homenews/se...

...Talk about Health reform...talk about Republicans....Talk about Financial reforms..but the complaining about  behavior of people in the Senate is "get of my lawn " material

The Senate... (0.00 / 0)

is an undemocratic, progress retarding millionaires club. Dodd seems more upset that his buddy Lieberman got told to STFU, than about the loss of the public option in the Senate bill.
