Marriage equality: One year later

by: ctblogger

Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 20:36:24 PM EST

Today marks the first anniversary of marriage equality and contrary to the nonsense that continues to spew out of the mouths of the those who mask their bigotry behind the veil of religion, marriage as they know it is still in tact.

In marking this one year anniversary, the groups Love Makes a Family (LMF) and Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) organized a marriage equality rally at the State Capitol.

Christine Stuart at CTNewsJunkie has the details:

It wasn't just one court, one legislature, or one governor who made marriage equality for same-sex couples possible. It was a movement supporters said Thursday at a gathering to commemorate the one year anniversary of the day Connecticut began allowing same-sex marriage.

Carol Buckheit, executive director of Love Makes a Family, the advocacy group which advocated for marriage equality, said since Nov. 12, 2008 more than 1,700 same-sex couples have tied the knot. However, the number is probably larger since it only includes couples married before June 2009.

[...]

Elizabeth Kerrigan and Joanne Mock, the two lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit, were married today at noon in their living room by Supreme Court Justice Richard Palmer, who authored the majority decision.

"Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same-sex partner of their choice," Palmer wrote. "To decide otherwise would require us to apply one set of constitutional principles to gay persons and another to all others."

[...]

The co-chairmen of the legislature's Judiciary Committee were also on hand for the celebration.

State Sen. Andrew McDonald, D-Stamford, thanked the eight couples who brought the lawsuit against the state and reflected on how it was not an easy issue for the legislature to deal with through the years. He said it was not an easy issue for some of his fellow colleagues and some struggled with it, while many were able to change their minds.

State Rep. Michael Lawlor, D-East Haven, said marriage equality was possible in Connecticut because there was a cultural shift toward acceptance. "I'm mindful that the rest of the country is not as fortunate as we are here in Connecticut," Lawlor said.

The fact that Gov. M. Jodi Rell mentioned and got choked up about voluntarily signing the first in the country civil union bill when she announced she would not seek another term earlier this week really shows how far the state has come, Lawlor said. "What more do you need to know."

Although I'm still depressed over Maine's boneheaded decision to discriminate against same-sex couples, I'm thankful to live in a state where marriage equality and civil rights for all people (regardless of one's sexual orientation) exists.

Outrage

The word "outrage" barely begins to capture the tone of this new documentary on gay public officials who vote against the interests of the gay community because they're afraid to come out of their own closets.

"Outrage" isn't always perfect and may not always be fair, but if you like straight talk, pardon the phrase, you'll get it here. Agree or disagree with director Kirby Dick, you know exactly where he stands and why.

And in the end, ironically, his most convincing argument may not be the one he sets out to make.

While the documentary argues that "self-hating" closeted gay politicians damage the rest of the gay community when they vote against gay interests as a camouflage technique, it makes an even stronger case that by living a lie, they cripple themselves.

I will be grateful to the day I am dead for the work and compassion and patience and thoughtfulness of the people who brought this equalization to Connecticut. The brave people who brought the law suit, complicating their lives for a number of years, and the absolutely wonderful staff and volunteers with Love Makes a Family.

Since we must never rest on our laurels, especially since they are few and far between, it is important to note once again that as of today, Love Makes a Family has "Closed it's Doors." Don't be sad, be GLAD (haha).

And please remember to send a little continuing love of the cash variety in the direction of the Love Makes A Family Political Action Committee. The all-volunteer PAC will support those running for office who will continue to fight for the needs and rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trangendered, queer, questioning, and just plain old bi-curious people.

Marriage Equality (0.00 / 0)
As a progressive straight male I was happy when marriage equality came into being. After years of demonstrations and signing petitions,  I was happy to read  the decision allowing marriage equality, knowing that there still is DOMA and "dont ask dont tell" and other issues  to contend with.
