Q poll: Dodd 38 Simmons 49

by: Scarce

Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 09:28:46 AM EST

There's little good news in this just released Quinnipiac poll for Chris Dodd. He's been trending in the high 30's for the last seven months now, while Rob Simmons is back up to near his high.

Of some interest though is that there now seems to a race among the Republicans. Linda McMahon's millions in ad buys have put her on the map, as have to a smaller extent Tom Foley, both at the expense of Rob Simmons.

Counting on your opponent/s to weaken themselves and deplete their resources is not a winning strategy though, as eventually Chris Dodd or someone else will have to win the seat, not expect someone else to lose it.

Senator Dodd needs to announce his retirment (4.00 / 4)
He's a good and decent man who will certainly lose the election next year if he runs.  We are fooling ourselves if we think that Mr. Dodd will miraculously come from behind to win.  The tide of events is against him.  The economy is in horrible shape, and it is virtually impossible that the anger and frustration that elected a Republican mayor in Stamford in a landslide and brought in a far-right nut-job in Virginia will do anything but give Nutmeggers an opportunity to vent against Mr. Dodd.  Furthermore, the will of mainstream Democrats and progressive independents to come out and support him has been significantly weakened by Dodd's repeated and inexplicable defense of Joe Lieberman, the most hated man by Democrats in this state.

He needs to read the writing on the wall and announce his resignation- now, before it's too late.

The only chance I can see for Dodd is if (0.00 / 0)
they finish with a stronger more available Public Option than we have seen so far and do it fast so Dems can move on to what the voters see as biggest priority.

The economy.

Even 53% of Republicans say they want to see a jobs/works program from the government: rebuilding roads, bridges, etc. other infrastructure.

Dodd will have to actually bust some heads in the financial sectors, as well, if he wants to have a chance to regain his credibility amongst those where it has slipped.

Frankly? I don't see either of those things happening (or happening fast enough) for it to help him.

Increasing access for health care to everyone would, obviously, be a good first step towards creating a lot of good jobs. But the way they have it legislated we won't see those jobs for years to come. Even if they made the legislation truly universal we would have to wait for enough workers to get trained in many of the different jobs that would be created, anyways.

Short term solutions? Roads, bridges, turning the economy green and incentives to keep the manufacturing jobs that come with a green economy in the country.

I find it interesting that (0.00 / 0)
Simmons drop since the last R primary poll #s is pretty close the numbers that McMahon gets this time. And looking at McMahon's "favorable" numbers her support isn't likely coming from Republican women. Is her base the "I grew up on WWE" crowd?
