Ned Lamont on Lieberman's Political Allegiance

by: Scarce

Tue Nov 03, 2009 at 05:38:50 AM EST

h/t Heather at Video Cafe for the video and transcript.

Maddow: What do you think those consequences will be though? One of the things that we have to think about is what happens in Washington, whether or not the Democrats and the Senate allow him to keep his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee-there's also the question of whether he faces political consequences at home. He seems to be planning to run again.

Lamont: I believe-I probably wouldn't know-I'd be the last person in Connecticut to know whether he's going to run again but I can tell you this; there's an awful lot of folks here who are looking forward to the opportunity of challenging Sen. Lieberman. You know during our race a few years ago he said nobody wants to have a Democrat elected president as much as I do. He supported health care reform. Nobody wanted to get the troops home more than he did. Three years is a long time. I think there are a number of folks, independent, moderates, Republicans and Democrats who are disappointed where the words aren't matching the action and are looking for a change.

Maddow: Why do you think he doesn't just become a Republican?

Lamont: I think he's been a Democrat for an awful long time, but I think tactically he's probably looking at his options right now. I've got to believe when you walk away from health care reform, when you deny your fellow Senators the right to vote on health care reform, that seems to be somebody that knows he was elected in 2006 with overwhelming Republican support. I think that's his base.

Lieberman's Allegiance (4.00 / 1)
Is to the military industrial complex. And anything he says otherwise is just a Kabuki dance. The shadow government is above and beyond any particular political party, and studying joe's actions makes that painfully obvious. Right now I'd say he's one of the most powerful men alive.

Here's a link to an article by Russ Baker (author of "Family Of Secrets") that will provide some insight:

http://www.truthout.org/11020910

The internal battles between American presidents and their national security establishments are not much reported. But if it is an invisible game; it is also a devious and even deadly one. Our civilian leaders end up mirroring the chronically nervous chiefs of state of the fragile democracies to our south.

Those who do not kowtow to the spies and generals have had a bumpy ride. FDR and Truman both faced insubordination. Dwight Eisenhower, who had served as chief of staff of the US Army, left the White House warning darkly about the "military industrial complex." (He of all presidents had reasons to know.) John Kennedy was repeatedly countermanded and double-crossed by his own supposed subordinates. The Joint Chiefs baited him; Allen Dulles despised him (more so after JFK fired him over the Bay of Pigs fiasco), and Henry Cabot Lodge, his ambassador to South Vietnam, deliberately undermined Kennedy's agenda. Kennedy called the trigger-happy generals "mad" and spoke angrily to aides of "scattering the CIA to the wind." The evidence is growing that he suffered the consequences.

Lieberman (3.00 / 3)
I respectfully disagree with LakeZoarian on his analysis.I think Joementum is beholden to, or supportive of, the large corporations...Isreal....the Iraq and Afganistan War...the military industrial complex..the wealthy...and the economic and political advancement of himself, his family, and his friends.

Why on earth did Thomashooker (0.00 / 0)
give this comment a 1 rating?

Bruce, through his position in the leadership of State Central and his years of activism, has had more and more intimate contact with Lieberman than anyone who posts here.

Some rumblings (0.00 / 0)
Reid may have reached a "private understanding" of sorts with Lieberman. Given that both are friendly to insurance interests, I'd guess it would mean making the toothless bill even more toothless. Maybe Holy Joe would take the well of the senate, make some grave statements about deficits or some Repug bullshit for the cameras, and then allow the cloture vote knowing the public option was watered down enough for WellPoint's liking.

If Lieberman intends to seek reelection, the money (0.00 / 0)
has to come from somewhere.  I do not believe it is too much of a stretch to see Lieberman positioning himself as a combination Darling of the Right and Trojan Horse to become the recipient of big time right-wing campaign contributions.
