Bysiewicz Way Ahead

by: Jon Kantrowitz

Tue Oct 27, 2009 at 15:59:19 PM EDT

In February the Quinnipiac Poll called Susan Bysiewicz an "early favorite in a Democratic primary with 44 percent, followed by Malloy with 12 percent and Amann with 4 percent."

A poll the Susan Bysiewicz exploratory committee conducted earlier this month shows that not only is Jodi Rell vulnerable to a challenge, but that she is particularly vulnerable to a challenge from Bysiewicz .

In a head to head match-up, only 47% support Rell and 41% support Susan Bysiewicz.

Bysiewicz runs considerably stronger than Dan Malloy does against Rell, with Malloy at 31% to Rell's 52%.

Meanwhile, in a poll of Bridgeport voters conducted for the blog Only In Bridgeport the following question was posed:
if the Democratic Primary for Governor were held today, would you support Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz or Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy?

The results:

Bysiewicz 31.44 percent, Malloy 14.56 percent

I could fully support.

I can't believe Malloys people are so dam brain dead they are floating the Idea of making the turncoat Sen Joan Hartley of Waterbury Lt Governor.Malloy is TOAST!!

Hartley IS An Insane Suggestion (0.00 / 0)
What ARE they thinking?

I am pretty sure that the Joan Hartley idea (0.00 / 0)
Is a rumor put out by a consultant to Amann's campaign from Patrick Sullivan's office.

Patrick Scully and Joan Hartley (0.00 / 0)
For more on the dirty tricks of Patrick Scully, read my blog post, The Patrick Scully and Joan Hartley Affair.

As to the poll itself, it is still very early and I trust Quinnipiac as well as most campaigns internal polling about as much as I trust Dautrich.

It is still very early in the Gubernatorial and I wouldn't be surprised to see many more twists and turns in the coming weeks and months.

And about the Bridgeport Poll (0.00 / 0)
Patrick Scully doesn't seem to think much of that poll either.

VALIDITY OF NUMBERS IN BRIDGEPORT POLL QUESTIONED.

However, we also need to question the validity of anything that Scully says.

I don't get it (0.00 / 0)
I am not on a first name basis witih "Suzy" but I have to say, I'm puzzled at the enthusiasm on the one hand -- and on the other, not surprised because nobody really knows much or pays any attention to how SOTS is or is not run.

This is not IMHO somebody who has done a particularly aggressive job of running the office of the Secretary of the State.  The audits continue to be run very poorly in many towns, and there just is no fire in the belly for cleaning up the problems.  The "baby steps" approach to getting election administration competency is downright scary.  The story as to why there was no training developed for town registrars was that it was "an unfunded mandate".

The lack of training is on a very basic level. Exactly how much funding would be needed to create e.g. videos on mini topics with maxi results -- e.g. how about how to hand count ballots (remember East Haven)? Towns that have been audited multiple times STILL show up in audits without a clue as to the importance of blind audit counts and not "fudging" the results.  You cannot identify machine malfunctions if you fudge a count by a few votes.  And filling out the report forms? Give me a break.

Is this minor stuff? How seriously do you take the quality of your elections? The audits in many cases are pro forma, going through the motions, and don't demonstrate a thing.

Looks to me like this is someone who really doesn't want to rock any existing "boats" out there.

One cannot help but ask why so little seems to be done that effectively addresses specific or general patterns of election officials' incompetence or even misbehavior.  Lots of explanations why not, lots of cheerleading about how great things are going and hot disapproval of anyone who isn't on that same qavelength about how things are going .... and not too many people looking under the gloss for any actual substance. But people think she is "nice".

Reagan and Bush's earlier incompetence proved predictive of their competency in higher office.

Democrat or not, I guess I am unclear aboutthe reason why Susan Bysiewicz's performance as Secretary of State  would not be predictive of her style in running the state.

There is a also disconnect for me with being the chief election official and running for higher office.

What happened to Nancy Wyman?  If we want more than a rose garden governor, maybe somebody skilled at finance would actually make sense at this juncture.  I hope she was not strongarmed out of the race because it was someone else's "turn", as local Democcrats are fond of saying.

I would agree. (0.00 / 0)
Proactivity in the election process has been lacking. Bysiewicz appears inclined to avoid rocking any boats. She avoided challenges to Diebold by turning voting machine assessments over to UCONN -- thus enabling her to appear non-partisan without having to take responsibility.  And she did nothing to prevent Joe Lieberman from creating a bogus party in order to run for re-election after being defeated in a primary.  Connecticut needs leadership, not conflict avoidance.
