Lieberman Repeats Threat To Support GOP Filibuster Once More

( - promoted by Scarce)

He's said it many times before, but this is the most definitive statement yet from Joe Lieberman that he will work just as hard to kill health care reform in 2009 as he did in 1994.

TPM:

"I told Senator Reid that I'm strongly inclined--i haven't totally decided, but I'm strongly inclined--to vote to proceed to the health care debate, even though I don't support the bill that he's bringing together because it's important that we start the debate on health care reform because I want to vote for health care reform this year. But I also told him that if the bill remains what it is now, I will not be able to support a cloture motion before final passage. Therefore I will try to stop the passage of the bill."

Filibusters in Joe Lieberman's mind are apparently only reserved for Democratic presidents' major domestic policy initiatives, and not for right-wing Supreme Court justices.

If nothing else, this is the clearest signal yet that he is strongly considering retirement in 2012. It would be political suicide in Connecticut to be seen as the Senator who killed health care reform -- and Lieberman is not only not running away from that potential label, he is actively embracing it.

Update: #CTBattleRoyale weighs in: Lieberman gets support for his statement from two Republican candidates for Senate via Twitter:

@robsimmons: Senator Lieberman is right to oppose the Dodd/Reid healthcare gov't option http://bit.ly/3augfS

@LindaForSenate: Sen. Lieberman made the right decision opposing government-run health care.http://bit.ly/335syd #linda2010

Update 2: And guess who else is happy? Aetna:

Yet this afternoon, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) broke with the Democratic caucus that he is a member of and vowed to join a Republican-led filibuster if the public option is not removed from the bill. In response, insurance company stocks - which plummeted Monday as Reid made his announcement - shot up after Lieberman made his announcement around 1:30 pm.

ugh (4.00 / 1)
Here's Lieberman's office number: (202) 224-4041

Maybe we can encourage his staff to walk out on him en masse as a form of protest.

You cannot leave a message at this time... (4.00 / 2)
...because this mailbox is full.

Will try again later and tomorrow. Sent an email, too, but don't expect any answer to that.

I got through (4.00 / 2)
after two calls. Although I was polite but direct, the female aide was at the end of her rope and quite nasty almost hanging up and never asked my name or address. Apparently many 'out of state' DailyKos members have been bombarding them with calls.

We knew this was coming (4.00 / 1)
Now he's got to be isolated and left flapping in the breeze.
If he tries to pull another centrist gang sabotage ala the wrecking ball they threw at the stimulus ("in order to get 60 votes") -- the WH and Congressional Dems should not budge.

The "opt-out" public option is a compromise of a compromise of a compromise of a compromise.  Enough!

Pelosi should now move first.  Reid needs to stand by his bill.  If reconciliation is what it takes in the Senate, then that'll be what it takes.

And Joe can go stick it.

Nuclear option (4.00 / 2)
Is it available to Democrats like it was to Republicans?

A "Gang of 53" willing to vote to change the "motion to proceed" and "Cloture" rules could force the hand of the Corperate Whore Democrats threatening to join in any filibuster.

Ned Lamont for governor? Or for senator? (4.00 / 1)
It's clear that LIEberman is finished.  It's clear as daylight that America and the Constitution State would be much better today were Ned Lamont to have been elected three years ago.

So the question is where Ned deserves to be: the governor's mansion, or the United States Senate.  It's a toss-up to me.

I hope that Chris Dodd finally stops sticking up for LIEberman, however.  There's no longer any excuse.

Joe Remains True to Form (4.00 / 1)
It would have been shocking if he behaved in the public interest; in Joe's world, it's always been about Joe's ego -- never in terms of the interest of his constituents. Of course he won't run again; Joe knows he'd lose big time! Instead, he continues to collect big bucks from the special interests whose agendas coincide with his own.

Reconciliation appears to be the only way of achieving meaningful health care reform; and Joe be damned . . . .

Harry Reid still smoking dope (4.00 / 1)
"Joe Lieberman is the least of Harry Reid's problems," Reid told reporters at his weekly press conference.

During a Q&A session with reporters, Reid offered a fairly spirited defense of Lieberman, signaling perhaps that he doesn't believe Lieberman will ultimately be an obstacle--or at least that he doesn't want to tip his hat: "I don't have anyone that I've worked harder with, have more respect for, in the Senate than Joe Lieberman. As you know, he's my friend. There are a lot of senators--Democrat and Republicans--who don't like [parts of this bill]... Sen. Lieberman will let us get on the bill, and he'll be involved in the amendment process."

Reid went on, "Some of you will recall one reason that we were able to solve the problem with the nuclear option is that I called Joe Lieberman to my office, and said Joe I want you to join the enemy and get us out of this deal."

Lieberman involved with "amendment process"? (4.00 / 1)
Maybe Joe wants a "Bomb Iran" amendment in the health care bill. Whatever he's thinking up, it can't be good.

Time to go Joe. (4.00 / 1)
Obama: Joe, I saved your ass, you're sinking mine.
Joe: Hadassa told me her friends needed me on this.
Obama: Joe, is it worth the charimanship?
Joe: You promised...
Obama: Joe, it's your call, but if it's 59 and you are out there alone, know that you will be stripped of everything.

Okay, a boy can dream... What I suspect happened is President Snowe and Mr. Obama wants the trigger and they are using Joe to help them get it. For those who don't remember the last trigger, it was used by big-Pharma on drug imports. If they didn't change their ways then imports would be allowed. And they didn't change their ways and the trigger has never been pulled. Every month, when I pay in excess of $250 for my meds I wonder just what happened to that trigger and how come it hasn't been pulled.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.
