Merrick Alpert raises $19,619 for 3rd qtr

by: Scarce

Thu Oct 08, 2009 at 10:50:03 AM EDT

Merrick Alpert, the Mystic businessman who is going up against the state's Democratic party establishment by challenging U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, reported a total of $19,619 in contributions during the third-quarter of 2009.

The campaign received 136 donations, 90 of which came from Connecticut residents. The average contribution was $144.26, according to the campaign. More than a third came online, through the candidate's website.

"I am very grateful to the 116 people who contributed to my campaign,'' Alpert said in a press release. "

Considering Alpert spent more than he raised in the second quarter from donations other than himself you do have to wonder how much money he will pour into this exercise in futility. On the one hand this campaign has raised his profile from non-existent to barely existent but will he ever get elected as a Democrat anywhere after challenging Chris Dodd? Highly doubtful.

Received a long, pleading message on my phone (0.00 / 0)
a week or two ago from some young chippie asking me to throw my support Alpert. The only connection we had was through John Kilian- who had called both myself and Ed A. fishing to see if we'd try to deep-six Merten's campaign. I had once googled Kilian's name and found he'd done a fundraiser for Merrick - and he's also the new CFL secretary (I think - it changes monthly). I find it hard to believe that Merrik can call every Dem in Trumbull and leave long, involved messages.

Kilian also said something about how he wanted to run on the CFL line, supporting medical marijuana. I asked him to stop giving out my phone number.

This is his reply to me:

Sue,
Thanks for the link. I am not sure what you mean by sending it. We have invited several candidates to our show and hosted a couple.
John Mertens will get his time on the show, too. We are all about leveling the playing field.

Time is just about up if you want to participate in a January caucus. I have been able to attract several new faces to the crowd, and we do not agree on a candidate. We do agree that we need more time to decide.

This is a draft of a letter I am planning to send to CFL members. You may or not get this in the mail, depending on whether or not you join our effort.

Dear CFL Member,

Your attention is needed in order to position this party to assume a decisive role in the 2010 race for U.S. Senate. In a race as close as this one is expected to be, we can either deliver the margin of victory to one or the other major party candidates. We also have the option to field our own candidate, and John Mertens has begun his campaign in earnest.

While we are unlikely to agree on who should be our party's nominee at this point in time, I believe there is a widespread sentiment that it is too early to make a final decision on this nomination. Our rules compel us to meet before the major parties complete their nomination process, but they do not compel us to nominate candidates at this point in time.

I am proposing our party rules be amended to both allow John Mertens to continue his campaign with our party's backing, and to permit the membership to make a final determination as to our nominee after all the conventions and primaries have taken place in spring and summer.

Please support the proposed rule change:

rule 12b:
Nominations of candidates made prior to the final endorsement of all major parties for the same office, heretofore referred to as "early nominations", must be ratified within thirty days of such major party endorsements.

Ratification of such early nominations occurs when either
a) a petition with a majority of fully vested party members as of the date of the last final major party  endorsement  is filed with the Secretary of State, OR
b) by virtue of a majority vote at a statewide caucus under previously mentioned rules.

Should an early nomination fail to be ratified by either petition or caucus then the early nomination will be voided and the vacancy will be filled at the statewide caucus called for the purpose of ratifying the early nomination.
