#CTGOPBattleRoyale: Linda McMahon Helped Defeat Rob Simmons in 2006

Linda McMahon helped defeat Rob Simmons in 2006

This morning, proud non-voter Peter Schiff officially entered the ring of the 2010 #CTGOPbattleroyale. This is the man about whom Stuart Rothenberg wrote earlier this year that he saw:

"...no evidence that he understands how to talk to voters who have the kinds of problems that average Americans in Connecticut face each and every day, no evidence that he'd be effective in the Senate and no evidence that he has even the vaguest idea how to put together a campaign"

But while Schiff will have tens of millions to spend savaging the Republican party, he may actually be late to the main event: Linda McMahon vs. Rob Simmons, which now appears to be a rematch of an under-the-radar fight the two had in 2006.

In late September 2006, as then-Congressman Rob Simmons was busy trying to fend off Joe Courtney in the closing weeks of what turned out to be an historically close election in eastern Connecticut, Greenwich multimillionaire McMahon from the other side of the state contributed $10,000 to the DCCC to help give Simmons that final push off the ledge:

McMahon, Linda E.
Greenwich, CT 06831
World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.
DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE (D)
$10,000
primary 09/29/06

(Her Democratic party credentials go further: Linda McMahon also appeared at a College Democrats function at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004.)

Rob Simmons ended up losing his seat in 2006 by fewer than 100 votes. While many can take the credit for Courtney's victory that year, Simmons clearly has Linda McMahon to thank for it as well.

But that may be a while!!

Peter Schiff Should Not Be Dismissed (0.00 / 0)
Schiff will be a formidable candidate, he has been embraced by the CT Tea Parties, The End the Fed people, Ron Paulers and every CT third party (Except the working families) has pledged their support.

And CT Independent Party Chairman Mike Telesca offered the backing of CT's own CT for Lieberman Party run by Dr. Mertens also a potential Senate Contender. Oddly Ralph Nader has also expressed interest in Schiff.

While none of this support in of itself is significant, the fact that Dodd is Mortally wounded with a 39% approval rating anything can happen.

Should Schiff prevail in his Republican primary only catastrophe could bring him down in a race against Dodd. While Schiff has not given an accurate acounting of his funds, we do know that his supporters in one area raised a whopping $1,010,000.00.

The collective sum, (Not yet reported) is expected to be at around $3,000,000.00 out of the gate. This should certainly make Republicans cringe with nausea, because as we all know Schiff is anything but a Republican, he is more of a Libertarian, or Constitutionalist at heart.

He certainly has a big audience in the wake of the economic malaise, I think we are all watching him very closely and intently and Dodd is praying for some insane WWF ball kicker to oppose him.

CFL Is Going To Support Schiff? (0.00 / 0)
Has John Mertens no shame?

[ Parent ]
Jon, that would actually be a good thing... (0.00 / 0)
Think about it.

Schiff would take at least 1% away from the Republican, no?

[ Parent ]
Assuming Schiff wins the primary (0.00 / 0)
Otherwise, CFL won't retain ballot position unless they endorse Dodd.

I still can't believe Mertens is insisting on fucking up the whole thing...what a dick!

I'm confused... (0.00 / 0)
Can't they just give Schiff the ballot line regardless?

How does that work?

[ Parent ]
If he runs as a CFL candidate, then yeah (I think) (0.00 / 0)
I was thinking that you meant if they gave him a CFL cross-endorsement while running as a GOPer, he would have had to WIN the nomination first.  If he runs as the CFL candidate in the general election, then I think it might get the needed votes.

But the question remains, is this the CFL that Dr. John Orman would have wanted?

What to endorse a clown like Schiff... (0.00 / 0)
and make this into a very fun 3-way race?

Under these circumstances, I think he might like that!

superb investigative journalism, T! (0.00 / 0)
Great work.  Thank you!

Nice catch! (0.00 / 0)
Great post, tparty!

Hoo boy, poor ol' Rob Simmons is gonna have a bone to pick with Mrs. McMahon, eh?

The Winner Is Clear (4.00 / 1)
The Hartford Courant and the rest of the Media.
(PS: Not the CT economy, but the moguls wherever they are)

Huge Huge Primary battle, at least three candidates able to generate huge war chests.

Huge Huge Election battle, two candidates able to generate huge war chests.

Of course the public and issues do matter - as long a reporting is limited to the horse race, and issue information must be paid for.  And as long as the polls stay close the money keeps flowing.

because Connecticut voters count: http://www.CTVotersCount.org

McMahon took out full page ads in CT papers today (0.00 / 0)
I am sure their ad depts must be happy.

[ Parent ]
If anyone doubts the Courants endorsement (0.00 / 0)
can't be bought they haven't been paying attention.

[ Parent ]
None (0.00 / 0)
Mertens is quite certain that he will not win, his race is based on Naderism, or the principle tenet that everyone has a voice and should be heard. At this stage of the game Dr. Mertens an active member of the Independent Party is involved in negotiations and debate on what platform best moves votes away from any undesirable candidates.

Lets never forget that imatation is the highest form of flattery, but birds of a feather will siphon votes from one another making the candidate you support that much more desirable or less desirable.

Welcome to the social engineering tactic of Naderism, the spoilers may never win but they exert immense influence in pushing their chosen candidates. In many cases they can decide the winner and loser. In this case if Schiff gets the Republican nomination we could expect a third party platform that mirrors Dodds and targets his audience.
