Greenwich Schools Superintendent Caves on Obama Address (Jim Himes Speaks Out!)

by: thomashooker

Sun Sep 06, 2009 at 20:13:52 PM EDT

Newly installed Greenwich Public Schools superintendent Dr. Sidney Freund has decided to cave in to exactly ten right-wing crazies and to refuse to air President Obama's live broadcast to Greenwich students on Tuesday.  Dr. Freund stated that students will not view the broadcast live as scheduled, but "at a date to be determined".  According to Superintendent Freund, he decided to postpone viewing the president's address "primarily (because the) school district needs time to ensure that technical capacity is in place."  Yet that assertion appears to be false, since a Greenwich Time article quotes Freund as stating that he spent 30% to 40% of his time last week dealing with this issue.  Clearly he had time to deal with the technical issues surrounding the viewing, especially given that the school system was able to arrange for live viewing of President Obama's inauguration in January.  He also put forth the excuse that he needed to have an "instructional team" develop "age-appropriate activities to accompany viewing of the president's address."

What a crock!  The president didn't ask school systems to come up with activities to accompany the address, but merely to permit American students to view the address on Tuesday.

According to Greenwich Time, Dr. Freund received exactly ten- yes, ten- emails protesting permitting students to hear their president address them, and five in favor of preparing the schools to permit students to view the address.  Those few communications spurred Dr. Freund to engage in "careful consideration of all perspectives", after which he decided to pull the plug on the president of the United States.

In essence, it only takes a tiny handful of crazies to make new superintendent Freund act like the head of a school system in Alabama, or the Texas panhandle, or some other place full of uneducated, right-wing extremists.  There is little excuse for Dr. Freund's cop-out, because he served for years in nearby Dobbs Ferry, New York.

And Congressman Jim Himes thinks Superintendent Freund is full of crap also.  Congressman Himes issued the following statement on Sunday night:

"As a Congressman and as a father to two young girls (who attend Greenwich public schools), I urge all local schools to provide their students the chance to listen to the President's address to school children on Tuesday. Denying children the rare opportunity to hear directly from their President is a disservice to them as students and as young citizens. The President will encourage students to do what we all know is right: to work hard to prepare themselves to be successful citizens in the greatest democracy in the world.

"Whether we agree or disagree with everything the President says, this is a rare chance for classes and families to discuss and debate the President's speech and to develop the thoughtfulness and critical faculties necessary for success in an increasingly complex and challenging world."

It is all the more shameful, because Dr. Freund couched his language announcing that students would not be permitted to view the Tuesday address in language suggesting that they would:  "District to View President's Address to Students", was the title of his press release. He also states, "this is a teachable moment", but just not on the scheduled day of Tuesday, apparently.  Yet the truth was precisely the opposite.

And, according to the Greenwich Time article, Connecticut's State Commissioner of Education Mark K. McQuillan:

sent a memo to school superintendents Friday calling the controversy over the president's speech 'truly unfortunate,' 'inaccurate' and 'beyond the definition of responsible civil discourse'"

When the state superintendent of schools refers to postponing viewing of the president's address "beyond the definition of responsible discourse", and our United States congressman calls it a "disservice" to our young people, you know that Dr. Freund has come to a lousy decision.

Will Greenwich students be shown the president's address "at a date to be determined"?  Frankly, I doubt it.  A couple more right-wing nutjobs will send him emails, and he'll determine that it has to be put off yet again for another to be conjured up reason.

It is a very bad beginning for the new Greenwich Public Schools superintendent.  Too bad, because he's the seventh superintendent in just over ten years.

Greenwich Democratic Town Committee chairman Dave Roberson has sent emails urging Democrats and other non-nutjobs to contact the school system and Dr. Freund and demand that he do the decent thing and permit the President of the United States to address the students of Greenwich, Connecticut.  Let's hope that he understands what a shameful decision he's made, and in the hours before noon on Tuesday relent and do the right thing.

Too bad that Dr. Freund couldn't display the good sense and courage of his counterpart in Westport.  But he still has 24 hours to reconsider.  Let's hope he does.

Greenwich voted for Obama/Biden (4.00 / 1)
Obama/Biden 16,233

McCain/Crazy Lady 13,937

...though Greenwich also voted for the more palatable Chris Shays (to them) than they did for Jim Himes.

In almost every instance of this type of lunancy I've checked, the school district has voted for McCain.

Paging Dr. Fruend (0.00 / 0)

In an email sent today:

I'm a 1975 Greenwich High School graduate, and I disagree with the Greenwich decision not to show President Obama's live broadcast to students.

I remember seeing the assassination of President Kennedy while at Old Greenwich School, and the memory will stay with me all my life - in a positive way. That memory still provides me with the courage stand up for my belief system - knowing that some consequences may be detrimental.

Dr. Fruend might want to remember the problems that the play 'Voices in Conflict' caused the Wilton School System when they chose to make a political issue of an educational moment. Should his decision go national/internation media-wise, he has only his short-sighted agenda and cowardice to blame.

Dr. Freund's decision is to view the President's address to students, although not the LIVE presentation. The decision was made based on the principle that this message was important enough to ensure that every student has an opportunity to view it and for that we needed more time to purposefully plan. Please see attached release outlining the decision.
Thank you.

Dear Ms. Eves,
I'm sure that the student center can hold a large screen tv,  which could also be replayed as needed for those students who choose to sit there for their breaks

Maybe someone could also hit the power button for the t.v. in the library. Just so it doesn't look like you are cow-towing to those few loud, but yet obnoxious right wingers.

Exactly, Sue! He's playing both ends against the middle (0.00 / 0)
He satisfies the right-wing crazies by forbidding the speech's viewing on the day scheduled, but tells us it will happen eventually.  Does the school system and Dr. Freund really expect us to believe that he couldn't iron out tech problems over a three-day weekend, or over the previous week?  Give me a break!

And not a peep out of the Democratic members of the BOE.

complacency about technical incompetency (4.00 / 1)
If the superintendent is complacent about the snail's pace he says with a straight face would be necessary for school "technical" people to "handle" this situation, then I hope those technical people don't put it on their resumes that they "have the capability" to get a slow breaking news event to the students in e.g. no less than 3 days or they won't be able to get a job in this country.

All the districts with competent AV people should worry about losing their best people -- how much are they paid vs. the Greenwich folks for this type of incompetency?

Why aren't the Greenwich AV people ticked off that they were implied to be incompetent and were being used as the reason the setup could not be made?  Or is Freund gullible enough to believe some technical teabaggers who are claiming they are unable to do the setup while dragging their feet?

None of it is pretty.

Actually, as a kid I was in math class in a state that at the time had public schools that ranked I think 38th when the live radio was played over the loudspeaker/PA system to let students hear -- live I say -- the news of President Kennedy's assassination as soon as it was reported.  Kids could hear that 46 years ago in a school with far less funding than Greenwich -- but to hear in 2009 a plain vanilla "work hard" speech, DAYS are required --  Greenwich indeed has moved technologically backwards in the ensuing decades.

Honestly, Kim Eves is clueless if she thinks that the general public will buy this concoction - one doesn't have to be very skeptical at all to feel there is a large soupcon of BS in the announcement coming out of her office.

Freund should look himself in the mirror and ask where he gets his "info" about such events -- from the White House press office, or from Glenn Beck.   Which has proved more reliable as to the actual speech content?

Maybe we should ask the CIA to do a voiceprint and verify that the person speaking is really President Obama and not some subversive trying to brainwash our children into being hardworking and responsible.
