"Joe Lieberman Will Die a Democrat"

by: D for Demsbetta

Thu May 11, 2006 at 15:57:14 PM EDT

(BRILLIANT! - promoted by BranfordBoy)

This the new non-answer answer to the question of whether Joe is planning to do a spoiler run to deny Democrats his Senate seat if he doesn't get his way in August.

All day today I've been hopping mad about the revelation that up to 200 million loyal Americans are being spied on by the NSA as terrorist sympathizers. I thought I'd like to get my Senator's opinion on that.

Then I realized I hadn't asked him directly about his threat to run as an Independent, something which concerns me greatly right now as a convention delegate.

D for Demsbetta :: "Joe Lieberman Will Die a Democrat"
From my standpoint, I can't understand why we, as delegates to the state convention, should even be asked to consider a candidate who won't pledge to respect the results of the Democratic primary in August, and might try to screw us out of a seat. If he wants to run as an Independent, that's his prerogative, but he shouldn't be asking for our endorsement in Hartford next weekend. I've called and asked Reid to withhold any further support unless we get an unambiguous public pledge from Joe to not run as an independent. I've called Schumer and the DSCC and some others too.

But I haven't asked Joe or his campaign directly.  So I decided to give it a whirl.

Called the Hartford and DC offices and left my questions about the NSA scandal and General Hayden.  No word on the Senator's position.  Big Surprise there. They gave me the number for the campaign office (860.244.2006).

When I called there, they connected me with a guy named Kenny.  I shared my concerns about the threat of a spoiler run, and told him that as a delegate, I thought we should have that ruled out by all our candidates - Lieberman, Lamont, Destefano, Malloy, you name it.

Kenny told me that he had been present when Joe was asked that question and, "Joe has told us that he's going to die a Democrat."

I asked again, "That's not what I asked.  Will he abide by the choice of the primary voters?"

Erm, huh, hah.  Mumble mumble... "he's going to die a Democrat."

No doubt after some kind of deathbed conversion.

I asked again.  He said it a third time.  I asked if the Senator would make an unambiguous public statement that he won't run as a spoiler.  Kenny got all mush-mouthed, closing with, "I'm not sure if an announcement is planned."

"OK, here's the deal," I said, "As a delegate, I'm not going to consider any candidate valid who doesn't pledge not to run as an independent if they don't get selected in the primary."

"OK..."

"How about the Senator make that pledge next Friday night?  He can get up there and re-assure us all that he won't be running as a spoiler."

"That's a good idea..."

"But it has to be unambiguous.  No weasel words."

"Uh, right.  Sure."

So I guess we'll see what happens.  In the meantime, all of you can make some calls too.

UPDATE [1952 EDT]:  Just got off the phone with Kenny.  He was concerned about misperceptions or misquoting.  I offered to correct any misquotes, but he didn't have any specific corrections.

Kenny, I'm sorry if you felt like you were being "ambushed."  That was not my intention at all.  AFAIC, this is still an open question of great importance for CT Democrats.  My question is now out there in the open, and the Senator's response will soon be too, I trust.  But here in the blogosphere we do play hardball – or "ha'bahh" as Tweety says it.

But I will clarify this, since he brought it up.  What I've written here is based on my recollection of the conversation, jotted down right after it happened.  I did not have a recording, nor is this an exact transcript.  Some portions are ellided or paraphrased, as you can see.  He definitely did say "Joe Lieberman will die a Democrat" three times (at least).  I invited him to register here and post his comments if he'd like to tell his side of the story.  If he does so, please be civil.

Kenny did say this just now, which I repeated to make sure I got it verbatim:

We are spending every single moment contacting Democratic delegates and Democratic voters.
I pointed out that this doesn't quite answer my question.  Kenny did say that he has no knowledge of any plans to do an independent run, and that to the best of his knowledge Senator Lieberman will bow out gracefully if he loses the primary in August.

That's very good to hear, and I will look forward to a public announcement of the same straight from the Senator's mouth.

D.

"Die a Democrat" (0.00 / 0)
What on earth does that mean? Is he going to commit ritualistic seppuku on stage at the convention after losing the nomination?

glad to have you on board!

can you tell us where you are out of?

We need to keep pushing this point.

I've got a buddy who's an old-tyme kossack who's going to do it for me.

Also, I just got a call from Kenny, so I have an update.

Harry Reid ? (4.00 / 1)
I saw something on the net the other day, that Harry Reid is going to come out and Support and Back Lieberman, but Lieberman had to assure him first that he would NOT run as an Independent  before Harry gives his support.  The article said Lieberman planned on making that statement, so he could say, 'see I have the Democratic leaders backing".
I have emailed the DSCC and the DCCC over and over to stop supporting Joe, both financially and otherwise, because if/when he does turn Independent, they are going to look like asses.

It will not look good if every single Democrat nationally and state wide comes out for Lieberman.  We have to put pressure on them not to.  They can no longer be afraid of losing the seat, we don't have the seat now anyways!  And as far as Joe using some of his war chest to help Farrell, Murphy, Courtney, they just brought in record amounts.  Who needs Lieberman?

Good! Keep up the pressure. (0.00 / 0)
Reid sent out a letter – well actually Reid wrote a letter, which the Lieberman campaign distributed to delegates – asking people to vote for Joe at the convention.  Several of us here called him and asked him to withhold further support until Joe repudiated the spoiler threat.

Later that evening a rumor was floated at MyDD that Reid had asked for this assurance.

Hopefully it took, but we need more than rumors.  We CT Dems need to hear it publicly and unambiguously straight from the candidates mouth.  The same applies to Lamont, Malloy and Destefano, in case anyone thinks Joe is being unfairly singled out.

Only time I will say this. (0.00 / 0)
But Zell Miller says the same thing.

GodZella also does the bit about "die a Democrat?"

Maybe that's where Joementum got it from.

This is rich: Joe's commitment to the Democratic party (0.00 / 0)
is to re-register as a Democrat on his deathbed.

Woo-freakin-hoo.

I'd say I hope this happens before the convention (0.00 / 0)
But that would be mean and some have told me I've already used up my mean for the year.

Guess I won't say it then.

let's be clear here (0.00 / 0)
because we never know what the NSA may be reading and you wouldn't want styleistic writting approaches to send the wrong message...

You wre indicating that you hope that Joe Lieberman, the Jr. Senator from CT, has a nice normal life expectancy and dies of natural causes, but that you would appreciate it if he would come forward and make clear his commitment to the Democratic primary process and clearly state that as a Democrat he will abide by the decision of the Democrats who vote at the polls in the primary.

We wouldn't want any people at the NSA or any other Federal Authority to get the impression that any of us ever wish any harm to befall an elected official.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Meh (0.00 / 0)
Speak for yourself.  NSA and Bush be damned.  The only thing I want more than them all dropping dead is a long life in Abu Ghraib with a few of the innocent guys they illegally held in Gitmo as their guards.

now that suggestion has some merit (0.00 / 0)
wishing death on elected officials is a big no-no. Sort of like it being okay to "lust in your heart" and not okay to actually get a blowjob in the oval office...

Wishing that those in Congress that approve of torture have to undergo it for a few days, months or years, well, that's just fine and dandy. In fact, since Gonzolas says that it is not torture unless it leads to mahjor organ failure. well I'm all for Senator Lieberman showing how pleasant it is by having it done to him for three or four weeks.

and yes, the NSA can go screw themselves, but they would much rather be screwing you, and believe me, if the religious-fascists in the GOP (and their enablers like Lieberman) have their way, they will.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Simple Inquiry (0.00 / 0)
Has Ned Lamont been asked if he will run as an independent if he loses the primary?  If so, what was his response?  Also, if the primary margin were razor thin, say less than 5%, with Lieberman on top, would the Lamont base support an independant run, or support the Democratic nommine?

Ned has been forthright (0.00 / 0)
He has said he will support the winner of the primary.
