Redstate Senator Lieberman in 3/4 time

by: Scarce

Sun Aug 23, 2009 at 12:26:43 PM EDT

Lieberman was on CNN's State of the Union this morning, spouting his usual quackery. This time it was calling the Senate Finance Committee efforts to draft a bipartisan bill "the great hope now."

"Morally every one of us would like to cover every American with health insurance, but that's where you spend most of the trillion-plus dollars, said the Independent from Connecticut, who caucuses with the Democrats. "I'm afraid we've got to think about putting a lot of that off until the economy's out of recession."

"I think it's a real mistake to try to jam through the total health insurance reform--health care reform plan that the public is either opposed to or of very passionate mixed minds about. It's just not good for the system-frankly, it won't be good for the Obama presidency....There are other fights to fight," Lieberman said on "State of the Union," listing climate change, regulatory reform, and the war in Afghanistan.

"Great changes in our country often have come in steps....let's focus now on how to reduce costs," Lieberman said, adding that the six members of the Finance Committee - three Democrats and three Republicans - "agree on about three-quarters of what needs to get done."

Lieberman is becoming "more progressive"? Wanna revise that claim? (0.00 / 0)
Lieberman is the same right-wing slimeball he always was, and always will be.  Please, let's not goof around with any claim that he's becoming something he will never be: either a reputable, honest politician, or a progressive Democrat.

And more than a few so-called "journalists" have egg on their faces as well.  Remember this from Carl Huse and David Kirkpatrick of the New York Times in 2005: "

The (Democrats') disappointment with Mr. Lieberman illustrates the difficulty of trying to be a centrist in an increasingly polarized political climate."

Or how 'bout this gem from Janny Scott of the Times in 2003:

"Senator Joseph I. Lieberman has built his career doing what he did that morning: wading across ideological divides, hunting for common ground and doing it with a mix of civility and conviction that at its best has won over Democrats, Republicans and independents alike."

Sure, got it.  He's a real centrist.  And he's also a real loyal, life-long Democrat, too.

And let's not forget NYT's Jennifer Medina (0.00 / 0)

Jennifer just refused to believe that Lieberman was anything but wonderful...and a centrist.  This from August 25, 2006:

"Mr. Lieberman, a centrist Democrat who lost in the Aug. 8 Democratic primary to Ned Lamont, a wealthy businessman, is now running on his own line."

Tell us when the Economy will recover Joe? (0.00 / 0)
"I'm afraid we've got to think about putting a lot of that off until the economy's out of recession."

The bill as I understand it really starts to take effect in 2013.  Does Joe think it will take beyond that for the economy to pick up?

But wait, Joe will be out of office then - that in itself would be a huge boost to the economy.

The majority of Connecticut voters (0.00 / 0)
started doing the 12 steps with Lieberman following 2006. They aren't all the way there yet and they need a few more interventions and 12 step calls but more of them have been sober since 2006 than before.

Steps?

First the Medi, Then the Care? Right.

Centrist No! Self-Absorbed Corporatist Yes! (4.00 / 1)
Joe suggests that it would not be good for the Obama Presidency to . . .
jam through the total health insurance reform--health care reform plan that the public is either opposed to or of very passionate mixed minds about.
Joe doesn't give a tinker's damn about Obama's Presidency; lest we forget, he supported McCain-Palin.  Even so, he is disingenuous about the desire of an overwhelming majority of the public -- Democrats, Independents and Republicans -- to fix health care. Most of the passionate so-called objections come from those who either are certifiably crazy, or else they have been deliberately misinformed by those special interests so dear to Joey's heart -- and also to the heart of his dear wife.

Hadassah has. . . worked for the lobbying company, APCO Associates, that had many pharmaceutical and healthcare corporations among its clients, as well as four major drug companies such as Pfizer. In March 2005, Hadassah was hired by Hill & Knowlton as "senior counselor" in the firm's "health care and pharmaceuticals practice." Hadassah's close relationship with pharmaceutical and healthcare corporations while her husband introduced legislation benefiting these exact companies has raised questions about improprieties and conflict of interest.

I rest my case.

Post Script Re: Either opposed or of Very Passionate Mixed Minds (4.00 / 1)
Here's Joe carrying water again for the "naysayers."  I've just read and excerpted a reality check on some of the recent so-called polling data:

77% of Voters For a Public Option: How NBC/Ras Got It Wrong
It's all about the wording.  The most recent NBC/WSJ poll included the words "government administered" and Rasmussen's polls include the word "Congressional"; those pollsters could argue, and correctly so, that these terms are entirely accurate and appropriate.  However, the trick is that they add those terms to the question while at the same time omitting the word CHOICE.  The SurveyUSA poll uses both the words choice and government, and finds 77% support for a public option, the highest number yet; in fact, people overwhelmingly want the choice of a government plan in every poll that words the question as such, but when they're asked about a government plan without any mentioning of choice, the numbers are closer.

The bottom line: Americans want choices; so long as we have choices, we overwhelmingly support serious reform.  The only way to get that is to create a competitive environment in which citizens are not held captive to what amounts to monopolistic practices, bribes and extortion.

But it's a fair question.  Of course, Joey could do it for her. . . .

Joe Lieberman (0.00 / 0)
It  is  no  surprise  that Joe  throws  cold  water  on any progressive  democratic  legislation, whether   or  not  he  and  his  wife  are financially  living  off  the  opposition.
