Nominees For The Worst Democrats in the State

by: Jon Kantrowitz

Fri Jun 26, 2009 at 15:00:35 PM EDT

One of the truly great My Left Nutmeg contributors, mikect, who unfortunately no longer posts, used to identify The Worst Democrats in the State.

Well I've got some current nominees:

Democratic Senators Joan Hartley of Waterbury, Bob Duff of Norwalk, Gayle Slossberg of Milford, Ed Meyer of Guilford, and Paul Doyle of Wethersfield voted against the budget passed by the state Senate yesterday.

The budget would raise the income, cigarette, estate, and corporate profits taxes, a total of $2.5 billion in tax increases over the next two years.

Apparently these senators object to raising income taxes on households earning over $500,000 per year.

The alternative is severe cuts in every imaginable public service, including libraries, health care, child care, job training and education.

These five Senators also voted against the Paid Sick Days Legislation, killing it in the Senate by 1 vote after it passed in the House.

I second the nomination of Senator Joan Hartley (0.00 / 0)
I second the nomination of Senator Joan Hartley as worst democrat in Connecticut and make a call for primary challengers!  Who might be some strong candidates for state senate in that district?

Or maybe (0.00 / 0)
They object to the totally ineffective and totally wimpy "leadership" Williams tenure as majority leader has wrought.

I don't blame any of them for not voting to give the Republicans a big stick to beat the Democrats silly with.

Slossberg (0.00 / 0)
Always Thought Slossberg was a good Democrat, today she looks more like a Good Republican. Whose side is she on anyway? Someone in Milford should confront her over this betrayal. Whose side is she on?

I simply don't agree. (4.00 / 1)
There are any number of reasons these Democrats did not vote for this budget, and arguments could surely be made for or against this budget by a wide swath of Democrats across the state.

But to nominate these folks for the "Worst Democrats in State?" I find that ridiculous. If you want to do a full spectrum of their record, feel free...but one vote!?!You act as if there was just one choice here.

The alternative is severe cuts in every imaginable public service, including  libraries, health care, child care, job training and education.

This is simply not true at all and is a simplistic view at best.

Some of these Senators have done tremendous work during their tenure. You disagree with one vote and now you are a better Democrat than them? Do you want to kick them out of the party for this?

Sounds like the Bush Administration's "You're either with us or agin' us!" strategy. I don't like it. You want to talk about the vote specifically, go for it, debate it, berate it, whatever, but let's let the Republicans keep their labeling and broad generalizations.

It was 2 votes, not 1 (0.00 / 0)
They also killed paid sick days. And I just nominated them, didn't elect them. By that I meant to highlight their problem votes, not come to a final decision about their over-all qualifications.

And this wasn't just a vote your conscience vote, it was a vote on Democratic versus Republican solutions to the budget crisis - it makes all Democrats look bad.

Big tent... (0.00 / 0)
And this wasn't just a vote your conscience vote, it was a vote on Democratic versus Republican solutions to the budget crisis

Obviously, it was not as not all D's voted for it. What you mean is it was your definition of Democrat v. Republican.

I understand your nomination and reason for doing this, I reject the incendiary tone by using the "worst democrats" language. Don't we have enough that we can all agree to fight for or against? Take a look around the state right now at all of the municipal elections where there are some truly horrible R's and Democrats who make Lieberman look like a far-left progressive!

"Don't we have enough that we can all agree to fight for or against? " (0.00 / 0)
Apparently not.

That this crew is willing to throw the state into pandemonium so services across the board are cut 10% rather than have million-dollar-earners suffer a 1% increase at the exact moment we need services the most means that they believe some very different things than the mainstream of their party.

We're not at a place where a pure "more Democrats" argument resonates: if we can't get things passed with 2:1 and 3:1 majorities in the Senate and House respectively, then the problem isn't with the size of the tent -- the problem is the tent's state of disrepair.
