Merrick Alpert is NOT Ned Lamont

by: ctblogger

Thu May 21, 2009 at 14:29:06 PM EDT

Shelly Sindland report for Fox61.

For those reporters remaining the state's ever-shrinking mainstream media who are attempting to paint place Merrick Aplert's "FOX News style" campaign against Senator Dodd in the same light as Ned Lamont's 2006 campaign against Joe Lieberman (for example), fellow blogger CT Blue pretty much nails it.

If he [Alpert] runs as a Democrat, particularly a Democrat to Dodd's left, he gets no traction and no money. But if he runs as a Republican stalking horse, he gets plenty of free publicity via Fox and Friends, and possibly some money from right wingers looking to damage Dodd. So, in the short run, this gives him some visibility and maybe some money for a campaign that would otherwise get neither.

But publicity and money are usually only means to an end. Here's where the questions begin anew. Precisely what is Alpert trying to accomplish? If he's trying to actually win the nomination, he has already reduced his chances to zero.

In the end Dodd will have more money, and the attacks will only cause Democrats, especially activist Democrats, to circle the wagons around Dodd. After all, even those of us who would prefer to see Dodd retire gracefully feel that way more out of sorrow than anger. We like him, even if we are worried about his re-election chances. No challenger could make serious headway with Democrats with a slash and burn anti-Dodd campaign. In short, this strategy, whatever its short term benefits, guarantees that the Democratic candidate for the US Senate will not be Merrick Alpert. (Unfortunately, it also increases the chances that we will have two Republican Senators in 2011) It also guarantees that Alpert will have no future in the Democratic party. I think it's safe to say that Alpert can even forget about that town council nomination we were trying to give him.

This is not 2006, Dodd is not Joe Lieberman, and Merrick Alpert is not Ned Lamont.

Any questions?

Your Analysis (0.00 / 0)
I totally agree  with your analysis. One  wonders  why Mr Alpert had no known state-wide democratic player at his anouncement. The answer is pretty much what CTBlogger  states.Mr Alpert's  run seems  to be  some  sort of entitlement run from a man  who has made money buying and selling businesses, after he left PG&E  and Enron.Mr Alpert's  announcement was  filled  with personal attacks against Dodd  and had little of substance for us  to discern. He took no positions  other then on Iraq( it is no no risk  to be against that war) and Afganistan.

I expect Ms Sindland to continue this line on her Sunday show when Alpert appears on it.

"Some Political Experts Say" (4.00 / 1)
Shelly Sindland is the perfect example of why nobody believes a thing coming out of the mouths of either the Dead tree clowns or the infotainment industry that makes believe it's news on TV.Could she not find a "political expert" to attribute the rest to or did she as usual just make shit up?

I think it's simply marvolous the Hartford Courant, after getting rid of anyone who could be considered an A  team reporter, has gotten together with the B team "professional journalists" at Faux 61.This way the well deserved pink slips distribution can be faster and more effectively done which will put a quicker end to the farcical slop that has been making believe it's Journalism  we've been victims of for far far too long.

I'd add a third group. Along with the "Dead tree clowns" and the "Infotainment industry that makes believe it's news", think about the influence of "Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations" Command.

"If those in charge of our society...can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers patrolling the streets. We will control ourselves." ~~Howard Zinn

Who the hell is advising Mr. Merrick? (0.00 / 0)
My guess is he's flying solo.

That or some of Sam Caligiuri's buddies are helping him along.

A message of hope and inspiration, and some kind words for Senator Dodd, would have played out a lot better. But now it's too late for Mr. Alpert. (maybe he should move back to Florida?)

Anyway, this will probably give that asshole Schwartz an excuse for another poll, in which we'll be able to gauge how Dodd's Democratic support holds up when given a choice between Dodd and a generic, unknown Dem.

Just say "Enron" long and loud.
