My day at the State Capitol

by: ctblogger

Wed May 13, 2009 at 22:01:50 PM EDT

I spent the day in Hartford covering a number events at the State Capitol as well as attending today's session at the House.

Here's a brief recap two of the biggest items at the Capitol today.

1.: Sustinet Day

IMG_0633

Today, the healthcare4every1 campaign flooded the floors of the Capitol rallying support for their health care proposal bill, HB 6600: An Act Concerning the Establisment of the SustiNet Plan

During the rally, I had an opportunity to interview Juan Figueroa (President, Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut) and talked to him about the importance of HB 6600.

More on my day at the Capitol below the fold...

2. Death penalty

House

By far, the most debated bill on the House's agenda was H.B. No. 6578: An act concerning the penalty for a capitol felony.

After HOURS of debate, the members of the House voted 90 to 56, to repeal the death penalty...although the vote is not enough to override the Governor if she veto the bill. CTNewsJunkie has more... I'll provide video of the debate later...I'm exhausted.

Interesting day (0.00 / 0)
It was a kick to see the coalition members for healthcare, people from various groups all interested in solving a deep problem that is both economic and personal.

Many of the people who go bankrupt in the US have first suffered a major health crisis which saps their money and strength.

Actually, there were tons of people in Hartford today with these t-shirts on. I suppose we can get a count later from the SustiNet leaders.

And thank goodness for CT-N, so that we could watch the death penalty debates while lobbying (literally) for health care reform.

BlastFromGlast was there, as well as Tom Swan; Kate Tepper, Chair of the Fairfield County branch of Democracy for America; Gretchen Raffa from Planned Paernthood; Karen Schussler from C-E-O; activists from the Obama campaign; Bev Brakeman; and tons of people I have met over the past few years...

No wonder there is a recession - none of us are working at our jobs anymore!

My copy of the Courant was totally missing any info on our work yesterday.  But it had a huge picture on page 1 of one person walking a bicycle, part of another group working for bicycle lanes etc. ...but even there the Courant did not show anything about the size of that group.

What Me Worry!  My wife and I are among the lucky - covered for about $18,000 a year plus co-pays, deductibles, and dental bills.
