Christine Stuart in Time Magazine!

As Newsrooms Cut Back, Who Covers the Statehouse?
By Belinda Luscombe Thursday, May. 07, 2009

There are usually 11 reporters who make their home offices in the fourth-floor newsroom of the slightly Gothic marble and granite Connecticut State Capitol building in Hartford. Seven of them work for newspapers, two for radio, one for the AP and one of them, Christine Stuart, is the Connecticut News Junkie.

On any given day at CTnewsjunkie.com, there are stories about Connecticut's budget woes, health care issues and Senator Chris Dodd's attempts to reform the credit card industry. Most of the stories are written by Stuart. All the photos are taken by Stuart. And Stuart or her husband, who works as a layout editor at a local paper, handle most of the ads, which are for local unions or the Connecticut Dairy Farmers Association. So far, her best month garnered her site 67,000 page views. But Stuart, 31, who has to have a part-time job to make ends meet, says she is treated, more or less, as an equal by the other reporters in the office. "One of them told me, 'You have to make it, because you're the future.'"

The only drag (2.50 / 2)
... is that she'll never make a correction to a published piece. Well, she probably makes less mistakes than the rest of us lot. But still.

The real drag (4.00 / 3)
... is that you chose this time and place to make this comment.

shrug (2.50 / 2)
Seemed on topic. I'd love it if the future of journalism were more responsive and concerned about accuracy than the recent history of journalism.

Maybe that's the hazard of having journalists without editors. "Bloggers" -- a lower strata of writer, to be sure -- seem to be correcting stuff all the time.

"Accuracy" (4.00 / 2)
In this thread alone, seems she's got you beat handily in that department.

Sorry you're feeling sleepy (4.00 / 2)
You said:

she'll never make a correction to a published piece

That's a false statement.

But by your own standards, I am sure that a correction to your published comment will be forthcoming...

If you (or Christine) can point out an example where she made a correction, I'd love to. I got upset (along with Keith) that she wrote some "liberal and conservative groups both support the constitutional convention" horseshit back in the fall, and the only citation she offered was Caruso.

After I called the man -- who told me that he'd never supported the convention -- she wrote a new story about Caruso, but let the original piece stand. And she never did find a single liberal group supporting it. Oh well.

Same about the Howard / Jim line. It's been hanging around there for 4 days, and the comment had to be approved to be posted. Why wasn't a correction made? Who knows.

Your statement was provably false (4.00 / 1)
But worse, it was also a completely uncalled-for hit on one of the most valuable and industrious bloggers - or journalists - in CT.

So fucking prove it (0.00 / 0)
I'm eager to be proven wrong.

Hey how about that, they fixed the Dean piece (1.00 / 1)
So it appears I was wrong -- she will fix some errors if you throw a hissy fit in public about it.

here's the proof (0.00 / 0)
I guess maybe the political professionals on the left weren't supporting the constitutional convention because they have allegiances with the gay community. Can you blame them? The anti-family institute dominated all the convention stories in the mainstream media. If you weren't out talking to people every day - and you only read left wing blogs - you might have thought there wasn't bipartisan support for the convention. But there was support from the left, and quite a bit of it. Here's a story -- from ctnewsjunkie to boot, maybe you missed it -- that proves the point in no uncertain terms. Based on the numbers in the link below it was statistically impossible to state with accuracy that the convention did not have bipartisan support.

http://www.ctnewsjunkie.com/el...

It's interesting that folks seem to want the media to frame the argument their way, or no way. Isn't it possible that your impression of public opinion may have been inaccurate, particularly now in light of the numbers in that pre-election poll?

Look isn't this what comments are for? to help advance a story with new info, or if necessary, to provide corrected info? i don't get the angst. it makes no sense. why tear down the messenger? and to do it here in a thread congratulating ctnewsjunkie for some cool publicity? wtf?
whatever. to each their own i guess. it's a big internet.

just a thought... (4.00 / 1)
recognizing that she has time constraints, she's forced to choose between a new story or correcting an old story.  She knows we'll get riproaring mad over the slightest inaccuracies... so why not leave it to us to correct?

If the front page of the story is highly misleading, then the front page should be corrected.  But if the information is NBD, then I'd personally rather see her working on a new story... because the regular media doesn't seem to be doing so (that's a shot at ownership, not the journalists).

Of course, that's still a judgment call.  But I'm guessing that if the tone of our comments was strong enough... she'd make a front page correction.

More Than Happy To Help (4.00 / 5)
I would be more than happy to make a front page correction. My goal is accuracy. I can remember at least twice when it was pointed out that my information was incorrect and I not only corrected the information in the original story, but went one step further by writing another story. Please contact me anytime you believe there is an inaccuracy. I can be reached at cstuart05@comcast.net or by phone 860-978-1446. I would love to hear from you. ~Christine Stuart

Kudos to Christine (4.00 / 7)
She's doing the heavy lifting at the Capitol that too much of CT's media have deemed not "sexy" enough for the daily news cycle.

If there were some kind of blogger awards in CT (the "Bloggies"?) she would certainly deserve the very first one. More than anyone else in the local blogosphere, Christine deserves our appreciation and support.

Well done!

Connecticut Bob
