Transcript :

VAN SUSTEREN: Again, the whole business about the torture memos being released by the Obama administration -- good idea or bad idea?

LIEBERMAN: I thought release of the memos was a bad idea.

The President of the United States as the commander in chief has the right to decide what kinds of tactics he wants to use with detainees who we believe are associated with terrorism and what kinds he does not want to use. Congress legislated on that. I was a cosponsor with Senator McCain of the anti-torture provisions we put into law.

But once you start to take internal memos that have been designated as top secret --

VAN SUSTEREN: Even if it's -- first of all, is waterboarding torture?

LIEBERMAN: Well, I take a minority position on this. Most people think it's definitely torture. The truth is, it has mostly a psychological impact on people. It's a terrible thing to do.

I have said in the past, and I'll say it again to you, that I want the president of the United States in a given circumstance where we believe somebody we've got in our control may have information that could help us stop an attack, an imminent attack on the United States like 9/11 or, god forbid, worse, we ought to be able to use something like waterboarding.

But, generally speaking, it ought to not be on the table.

Incidentally, I believe General Hayden when he says that not just waterboarding, which he stopped, as I understand it, but a number of the other items on that list that have been published, really did work, did help to give us a lot of information we have about Al Qaeda.

Why do I think it was a mistake to give it out? It wasn't necessary. It just helps our enemies. It doesn't really help us.

Again, the president can decide what tactics he wants the CIA or the military to use on people we capture, suspects of terrorism. But to let our enemies know what we are going to do or not do, that's not a good idea.

VAN SUSTEREN: Senator, thank you, sir.

LIEBERMAN: Thank you.

Joe (4.00 / 1)
As usual  when Joe states a position it almost always is one that I disagree with and the above is no exception.

Joe an Apologist for War Crimes (4.00 / 1)
Joe, you fool, the fact that we waterboarded KSM and Zubadayah 266 times clearly proved that stopping another 9/11 attack had nothing to do with it.  History lesson, Joe: we prosecuted Japanese war criminals for waterboarding, notwithstanding your "minority" position on it.  Now, you sanctimonious twit, you want the President of the United States to be able to use that horrid and lawless technique, which every hands-on intelligence operative knows does not work, and keep those practices hidden from the American people.  God, I hope we can kick your sorry keister out of the Senate in three years time! Perhaps we should subject you to some waterboarding and you might have some second thoughts on your "minority" position that it serves some use.  Geez...

2012 (4.00 / 2)
This will be a great year for Connecticut.

Lieberman believes the President is above the law (4.00 / 3)
he said as much during the 06 campaign at an event I attended.

Lieberman admitted W broke the law by wiretapping American citizens without a warrant and the when asked if he should be prosecuted he said " No,Congress should change the law".

I suspect many criminals would love that to happen in their cases too but thats not suppose to be how our system works.

Unfortunately it seems Pres. Obama by his statement that no CIA torturers will be prosecuted is also putting himself above the law. The President can issue Presidential Pardons but thats not what Obama did.In my opinion he is walking a close line to obstructing justice already by interferring with the duties of the AG.

Why does he do it? (4.00 / 1)
What is the reason for saying torture is a good thing?  There is no political reason to do it anymore.

Does he really believe the BS that comes out of his mouth? (0.00 / 0)
"The President of the United States as the commander in chief has the right to decide what kinds of tactics he wants to use with detainees who we believe are associated with terrorism and what kinds he does not want to use."

Sorry Joe, no. When something is designated as torture the President doesn't have that right. The fact that Bush had the laws "changed" to fit his agenda is a criminal act in and of itself and he should be prosecuted with the rest of the scumbags who were gung ho to commit these horrible acts knowing full well that nothing of value comes of them. Ever.

Joe was up in arms about Clinton's blowjob (0.00 / 0)
But when it comes to Torture, He's all about moving on.
He is an embassasment to the state of CT and to the USA.

Obama's hands are getting dirtier and dirtier the more he trys to sweep this under the rug. If he does indeed let these crimes go unpunished then he is also a criminal.

So much for the "rule of law", that only applies to the luttle people, not our government.
This country has really jumped the shark!

What a Banana republic
