Legislative Alert: Marriage Equality Attacked

by: tessa

Fri Apr 17, 2009 at 14:26:34 PM EDT

Pasted below the fold is an email I just received from Anne Stanback at Love Makes A Family. There is an attack underway against the codification of the Marriage Equality Bill.  I called my Rep (Richard Roy) and State Senator (Gayle Slossberg) to urge them to Support SB 899 and this is what I found out:

The opposition calls are anonymous but are being counted anyway. They may be non-constituent calls (there is no way of knowing) and (also) there is no way of knowing if people are calling multiple times.

I asked them not to mark down calls if they are anonymous but they are doing so anyway.

The person at the Legislative Switchboard said the phones are going crazy today.

Make them Go Crazier!!!!! Call and leave your name and tell them you are a constituent!

Subject: A new low for our opponents

Dear Tessa,

Have you seen the ads or gotten a phone call?

Just this week, our opponents launched a last-ditch, desperate ad campaign in newspapers and on radios across CT, filled with false claims about Senate Bill 899, the "marriage codification bill."

We've won the right to marry and that right is safe.

But this "last gasp of bigotry," as one of our supporters called it, is our opponents trying to create loopholes for "legal discrimination" -- they are trying to amend the bill to exclude some businesses or organizations from following the law.

Our opponents are trying to make you believe that the sky is falling, but we think Connecticut citizens are smart enough to see through this. This is really about two people in a committed, trusting relationship who should not be excluded from the support that comes with marriage.

SB 899 passed through the Judiciary Committee two weeks ago and will head to the Senate shortly for a vote.

Don't let our opponents scare the public OR legislators! Make TWO CALLS and tell your legislators that our opponents' fear-based claims won't work in Connecticut.

This next part tells you how to contact your legislator...

CALL THEM TODAY with the TRUTH about SB 899:

Ask for your senator and your representative BY NAME and ask to be transferred to their office
Urge your legislator to support SB 899 with NO amendments (NO amendments is the most important part of the message)
CALL TODAY!

Learn more about the bill here, including the Judiciary vote tallies and public hearing testimony. Check out the great videos on our website and learn why our opponents are creating fake ads for fake problems.
