Many of you know that I've been a fan of Gov. Schweitzer (D-MT) since I first heard about him in 2004 from my favorite progressive journalist, nationally syndicated columnist, blogger, and cable TV guest commentator, David Sirota. David's article in The Washington Monthly titled "Top Billings" was written in the wake of John Kerry's Presidential loss to give Democrats hope and ideas on how to win against Republican and Right Wing strategies. Sirota, who served as senior strategist on Schweitzer's successful 2004 gubernatorial campaign, used Schweitzer's campaign as a model that Democratic candidates should study.
On January 21, 2006, I had a letter to the editor published in The New London Day titled Democrats, Fight Back Like Montana Governor where I promoted Schweitzer as a model for the 2006 Connecticut Democratic gubernatorial candidates. Over 3 years later, looks like the message got through.
Course it helped that Gov. Schweitzer did an outstanding job speaking at the 2008 Convention and became the talk of the country. I was not surprised that Schweitzer could deliver a knock-out speech, but I was glad that Democrats across the nation were finally seeing his talent too.
I'll have to repair my favorite bolo tie so I can wear it to the JJB dinner. I purchased my bolo ties at The Little B Barn, a Connecticut tack shop. My best bolo ties, oddly, came from the Little B Barn and not from my trips out West. I think they send the best bolo ties eastward for better market value, at least that is what a California tack shop owner told me in 1999.
FYI: Gov. Schweitzer is a rancher so I thought you should be aware that Connecticut has more horses per capita than any other state. Litchfield county has the most in the state followed by Hartford county. The CT Horse Council has some information about horses in CT. The University of Connecticut, which is in eastern CT, also has an Animal Science department and an equestrian team.
I'm looking forward to Schweitzer's visit and speech and hope you do too.
P.S. In a few days I'll write my Special Comment on what Connecticut's gubernatorial candidates can learn from Gov. Brian Schweitzer as well as what our state legislators can learn from him in regards to their budget battle. Here's some hints from Schweitzer speaking at Sirota's "Hostile Takeover" book signing in Washington D.C. in 2006.
