Lamont Muses Over a Run Against Rell

by: Scarce

Wed Mar 04, 2009 at 22:50:20 PM EST

Mark Pazniokas has an intriguing little story in the NY Times about Ned Lamont now expressing interest in a gubernatorial campaign. He'd obviously be a damn sight better than Jodi Rell and might even be able to whip the legislature into an effective body.

With the same bluntness he once directed at Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and the war in Iraq, Mr. Lamont complained about the inability of Mrs. Rell and the General Assembly to tame Connecticut's deficit.

Then he delivered an urgent outline of the budget address he would have given if governor.

"To me that was the opportunity to stand up and say, 'We're confronted with a $4 billion deficit,' " he said during a telephone interview from his office in Greenwich on a snowy morning. "This is the time for Connecticut to change the way we do business. And I have to tell you I'm going to bring labor to the table, and they are going to be part of this solution."

He is months away from a final decision, but after previously disavowing any interest in the job, Mr. Lamont said that a gubernatorial campaign grows more intriguing as the economy worsens and the deficit deepens, all harbingers of a protracted budget fight in Hartford.

Article was pretty snarky (0.00 / 0)
I guess Connecticut reporters just can't help themselves.  It's the way they are.  And Pazniokas was one of the better ones.  But bad article and unduly snarky.

I guess that Ned just has to put up with this stuff.  Can you imagine what Ken Dixon will do to him?

Pretty straightforward reporting (4.00 / 2)
..if you ask me.

He'd be very good, and (0.00 / 0)
at least he doesn't have 'Tough Love' issues to deal with like Malloy.

Would Malloy's son move into the governor's mansion with him if Dannel won?

dumb, dumber, dumbest (0.00 / 0)
I think these guys must have been high -- they all got arrested, even the victim.

[Malloy and friends] "produced what appeared to be two handguns and demanded the victim turn over the marijuana," [...]

The alleged victim, Eric Sing of 165 Old Kings Highway North in Darien, was also arrested and charged with filing a false statement and various drug charges.

Dumbest of all: our drug laws.

What if Lamont wins the nomination? (0.00 / 0)
How much you wanna bet that Joe Lieberman campaigns for Rell? I got a Benjamin that says he can't jump on that bandwagon fast enough!

a "Benjamin"? What's that? (0.00 / 0)

Seeing Robert Rubin's signature on that bill gets under my skin!

LaMont for Governor (4.00 / 1)
Ned  would  be as good a candidate as anyone in the known field so far....though  he does need  to ditch  the bumblers  who  ran his Senate campaign  and he needs  lessons  on   public debating

Lamont NOT LaMont please! (n/t) (0.00 / 0)

Indigestion... (0.00 / 0)
On Feb. 20, I ate some words on Ned because I suggested he was playing the drug war like a politico.

http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/sh...

Lamont said he was not considering a run for either the governor's seat or a senate seat.

Should I throw those words back up now?

Which is it Ned?

Are you in? Are you out? Are you shaking it all about?

Governor's Race (0.00 / 0)
Every Progressive I know in the Northeast corner of the State is supporting Susan Bysiewicz. (And I know a lot of active convention voting people)

Ned had his moment, and I would support him again if he ran for Senate, but this is not his race.

Governor's Race (0.00 / 0)
JJinCT....sorry  but  to me none of the 3  known candidates are "progressive".....Malloy is  a member of  the right wing DLC.....Amann  was  and is  right  wing...and Susan's  last race for Governor was  terrible...she allowed  herself  to be  chased  out  by 2 mayors...had a terrible campaign staff...and  had no substance  to her campaign speeches ....its  not  enough  to say  " i like  clean air and fresh  water"  ..

Ideology versus Political Style (0.00 / 0)
I think you're mixing them up here -- there are thorough critiques that one can make of Susan B (and I spend enough time around Registrars to be familiar with most of them, I think), but you haven't pinned any on her here.

At this point, I think our candidates have yet to be tested on their progressive credentials. Bysiewicz responded to the pressure against DRE voting machines, which is a plus, but hasn't (by virtue of her office) had much to say about the economic crisis. The DLC thing is a negative for Malloy, but he's got eight months left as Mayor to show us something we like. (Dear Malloy people -- please show us something we like!) Amann ... well, I'm comfortable judging his credentials at this stage, but he does have some brass huevos and after a few polls might even get clued in to what he has to do to get nominated for anything.

What I'm saying is that it's early yet -- let's watch them do their thing, and see how they respond to the pressure we put on 'em.

Bruce, why not try to get Malloy to quit the DLC? The organization was substantively wrong on both foreign and economic policy over the last decade, so quitting the group should be a freebie for the guy. Why not make a point of demanding it?

the DLC is effectively dead (0.00 / 0)
Here's the obit. It shouldn't be hard for anyone to quit it. What I don't understand is how one becomes a "member" and how one "quits"?

Al From, the founder, relinquished his chairmanship. That's how he quit. For regular members, what do you do? Say, take my name off your email list?

Malloy  wont listen  to me, I am too pro labor...to pro civil rights and liberties..and too progressive  for his taste...for example...i  am for a single payer universal health insurance, run by the government....this makes his eyes roll and he equates me  with extreme progressives.

there is the thing (0.00 / 0)
... where Malloy's online supporters brag about his anti-labor credentials as something that's supposed to impress people. I'm pretty comfortable saying that every negative impression I've ever formed about Malloy is due to the one-note, obviously-organized sock puppets that spring to life whenever a new post on the gubernatorial race goes online.

Are you on your DTC? If you line yourself to be in a good position to get a delegate spot, you might get yourself some good answers from the candidates. I actually get three delegates as a district leader in my town (though whether I want to organize them on behalf of my favored candidates depends on a lot of factors, most of which are unrelated to the Governor's office.) I think they have a pretty high level of awareness when they come around that they're talking to the people who will vote on their fate next summer.
