Discrepancies in state budget deficit

by: Scarce

Fri Feb 13, 2009 at 21:35:51 PM EST

Bloggers once again bring to the attention of the traditional media some glaring issues with obvious misstatements by state politicians, in this case Gov. Jodi Rell.

The video linked to by Davis is the one on the frontpage at MyLeftNutmeg.

Story by: Mark Davis

Hartford (WTNH) - Democrats in the General Assembly are accusing Republican Governor Jodi Rell of ignoring the real state budget deficit so she could promise not to raise taxes.

Almost immediately after Rell announced her budget nine days ago, Democrats in the General Assembly complained that it was over two billion dollars out of whack. They now are pointing to a news confrence, held two weeks before her budget announcement, as evidence that she knew it, because of this response by her budget director to a question from Chief Capitol Correspondent Mark Davis.

"I think it's fair to say that we will be closer to eight than six," said Robert Genuario, state budget director.

The governor was sitting right next to Genuario and made no effort to dispute what he had said. A video clip now the subject of local bloggers and even a YouTube video.

I think it is fair to say (4.00 / 1)
that we can now refer to specific reporters as "local reporter" and "a reporter from north-fuck of nowhere" given the liberties they take with Bloggers.

"the subject of local bloggers and even a YouTube video."

At least "some local reporter" had the decency to link to something, and I know I am being a bit nitpicky on that as it is a whole lot better than the reporters that just steal material like they thought of it all by themselves.

Yup (4.00 / 1)
And how about "a couple of reporters for a far away newspaper broke a story about the Watergate break-in"...

Or "local newsp(*) finds problems with Edie Parez kitchen"

(*)I can't afford to spell out newspaper, as not enough people read my comments anymore. If this keeps up, I may have to punish you by spending even less time blogging.

And here I thought (4.00 / 1)
you were trying to save on electricity by shortening your typing time with abbreviated names? We read your comments. I look at comments and if there is nothing to add to them I just give them a 4(if I have time?). If I disagree I may just stay away from them altogether, or point out a fact they may not have been thought of. Lord knows many disagree with me, and correct me all the time. lol

Hey Channel 8! (4.00 / 2)
Give credit where it's due! "Local bloggers" indeed! If they break the story for you, the least you could do is name them and the blog you read to get your copy.

Connecticut Bob

The sooner "local Bloggers" (4.00 / 2)
understand that Channel 8 and the rest of the MSM are part of the problem instead of jumping up and down and screaming yippie when they are paid a little attention by them the better off "local Bloggers" will be.

Newspapers and TV news aren't all going bankrupt because the product they produce is a great product.

PS-

Dear Sen Looney and the rest of the Ct Democratic Legislative Leadership,

Imagine if instead of a bunch of web illiterate Deadbeats we  currently have doing absolutely nothing at Dem State central headquarters you actually had a staff who could produce work like that you see on this website and others in CT to help get out an effective and coordinated message.

You,as the leaders of CTs Democratic Party have allowed Dem State Central to become a place where old useless people can be "kicked Upstairs" instead of a place where new ideas and new technologies are encouraged and nurtured and that is why most of you will be 6 feet under before you see a Democrartic Governor in our State again.

The irony was obvious, Keith (4.00 / 1)
I'm assuming you meant this as a reply to Bob (who also has a valid point, by the way) but no one is looking for credit, at least as far as I can tell. More a collective "WTH? Why do we have to do your job when you were the one in the room?" It was Davis after all who asked the question at the press conference but apparently didn't think it was noteworthy at the time.

MyLeftNutmeg has been around for nearly four years now, with umpteen instances of these type of examples.

It wasn't really a reply to Bob (4.00 / 1)
It was more a response to a ongoing tendency of many in the blogging community to equate attention by the MSM as validation of their work.

The MSM has long held "bloggers" in low esteem because it was in their interest to be the sole source of information and most of its members still do. As their audience shrinks and bloggers grows( which is obvious by the number of these MSMers who now have blogs) its best to remember the lessons of this history.

In days past a blogger was almost certainly assured if he got "press" from WTNH of one of our newspapers his or her message was seen and heard by a larger audience than his or her blog audience.Although that may still be true the trend is NOT the MSMs freind.

I think it's safe to say... (4.00 / 1)
..there has always been a reciprocal distrust among Connecticut bloggers and the MSM, even outright antagonism at times. Bloggers continue to be validated by what actually occurs, as opposed to reading about it later in print or appearing on the boob tube.

[ Parent ]
It's not credit for credit's sake (4.00 / 1)
It's just that sourcing in the MSM will eventually translate to more hits for the blogs that critically examine the news, and more "news consumers" will realize that they have viable alternatives to the MSM.  Or more accurately, an additional source of news and commentary to accompany the often uncritical, sometimes partisan, and always too brief MSM reports.

Then again, news blogs like CTNJ are staffed mainly by journalists who, for career reasons, certainly would like their name sourced for a story picked up by the MSM. Look at how DailyKos has started encouraging their diarists to use their real names to increase the chances of being taken seriously by the MSM and properly credited.  The fact that Obama called on a HuffPo journalist at his press conference is an indication that blogs are obviously becoming more accepted, and treated more like "real news".

Of course, I'm not going to stop being "Connecticut Bob" because it's fun doing it.  And besides, CNN already takes me seriously, so what more do I need to accomplish? ;)

A few points (4.00 / 2)
1. I think it's completely ridiculous that Gabe and Charles had to point out Gov. Rowland-Rell's dishonesty when it was MARK DAVIS who asked the question in the YouTube clip from her presser back in January. That alone speaks volumes...

2. The fact that bloggers have to pick up the slack and do the job that NANCY DINARDO and the Democratic leadership should be doing (i.e., pointing out Rell's dishonesty to the public) speaks volumes about our so-called Democratic Party here in Connecticut. This lack of leadership translates into Rell's poll numbers being high.

3. The fact that DiNardo allows this DISHONEST governor off the hook time and time again (while babbling Chris Healy is making TV appearances and taking advantage on online tools) further illustrates just how out of touch State Central is with reality.

In short, I don't blame the MSM media for not calling out Rell as much as I blame DiNardo and our leadership at the Capitol for not calling out the governor on her B.S.

Final point (4.00 / 1)
At least Keith Phaneuf had the decency to give credit to CTLP in their write-up for the JI.
On Jan. 20, Rell and Genuario had a news conference to disclose that the current fiscal year's budget deficit had surged dramatically from just over $350 million to $922 million.

When asked how that affected the deficit forecasts for 2010 and 2011, Genuario said that "while we have not completed our analysis of rolling this out for fiscal years '10 and '11, I think you can start with the assumption that the base is a billion dollars lower and that will translate into diminished revenue ... in each of the next fiscal years." He added: "I think it's fair to say that we will be closer to $8 billion than to $6 billion."

In recent days, video of that news conference has been posted on Youtube.com, and on Ctlocalpolitics.net, a Connecticut public affairs blog.

It's worse than that.Dodd is being pilloried by a dishonest and lazy CT MSM for the  totally manufactured  Countrywide Mortgage story.Even though the Phoney story was debunked by an expert in the field on Huffington post there is no pushback because CTs State Central Commhittee is too incompetent to even point out the FACTS.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

Tomorrow on "the Real Story"  the state of Ct will watch Shelly Sindland, Kevin Rennie and Rick Green perpetuate a phoney story created by the right wing noise machine because it is in THEIR interest to do so with absolutely no pushback from the Democratic Party.

There are plenty of things to be critical of in Dodds actions as a Senator over the last six years but CTs MSM prefers to promote phoney stories which require no real research, thought or,god fobid, work.

Sadly all too common. These dudes aren't paid to remember what anybody said yesterday.

Geez... (0.00 / 0)
Next you'll be trying to claim that the the difference between $6,000,000,000 and $8,000,000,000 is more than a mere typo...

just because the Governor and OPM built the budget around a fake number is no reason to focus on their faults... could happen to anyone...
