Lieberman is at it again ...

by: CaptCT

Fri Feb 06, 2009 at 10:31:41 AM EST

Joe Lieberman is up to his old tricks, undermining the Democratic Congress's efforts to pass an effective stimulus bill. Lieberman is supporting a version of the bill that would end up killing jobs, raising property taxes, reducing investment in green building, and cutting off vital infrastructure projects. The stimulus bill that was passed in the House is getting beaten down in the Senate, and Lieberman is carrying one of the clubs.

Just days ago CT's Congressional delegation and economic leaders championed the many benefits this bill would deliver:

Larry Summers, director of the National Economic Council, said Tuesday that the White House stimulus package could create up to 44,000 jobs in Connecticut, the majority of which would be in the construction and manufacturing sectors.

"The program will include the largest investment in the backbone of the American economy, our basic infrastructure --roads, transit, broadband, schools -- since the interstate highway system," Summers said in a meeting with reporters in the Old Executive Office Building.

Himes said when it comes to infrastructure, transit is the most important issue facing Norwalk and Fairfield County, but there are issues with government buildings and utilities that cannot be ignored.

"The schools are crumbling and the sewage systems are not up to snuff," Himes said in a telephone interview.

Well, those projects might have to wait another half century. Lieberman is working with Susan Collins, Ben Nelson, and a small group of bipartisan  incompetent sadistic Senators to eliminate a huge chunk of that necessary spending.

[T]he group had drafted a list of nearly $90 billion in cuts, including $40 billion in aid for states, more than $14 billion for various education programs, $4.1 billion to make federal buildings energy efficient and $1.5 billion for broadband Internet service in rural areas.

So, just when state residents were starting to feel hopeful about getting through this crisis without too much pain, Lieberman pulls the rug. It seriously makes you wonder if Lieberman enjoys watching bridges collapse and schools fall apart.

UPDATE Republicans Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe are voting more consistently with Democrats on the stimulus bill than Lieberman is. See the chart.

Thank you, Harry Reid (4.00 / 2)
I'm so glad your shrewd maneuver to keep Lieberman safely in the caucus is paying off SO well!  I don't know how we'd get anything done without Joe Lieberman on our team!

Here's a hint, Harry: when you refuse to hold people accountable, they have no incentive to behave.

Latest Cuts To The Stim Package: Head Start, Child Nutrition, Food Stamps Public Transit (4.00 / 1)
okay someone pls pls PLS tell me this is inaccurate

I've just obtained an internal Senate committee memo detailing the latest cuts being eyed by the gang of Senators being led by Dem Ben Nelson and GOPer Susan Collins. Here is what's being eyed in the bill right now:

*****************************

Total Reductions: $80 billion

Eliminations:

Head Start, Education for the Disadvantaged, School improvement, Child Nutrition, Firefighters, Transportation Security Administration, Coast Guard, Prisons, COPS Hiring, Violence Against Women, NASA, NSF, Western Area Power Administration, CDC, Food Stamps

*****************************

Reductions:

Public Transit $3.4 billion, School Construction $60 billion

*****************************

Increases:

Defense operations and procurement, STAG Grants, Brownfields, Additional transportation funding

*****************************

Nelson spokesperson Clay Westrope confirms the authenticity of the memo, adding that the figures obviously could change. But this is currently the general direction.

As you can see the amount being cut appears to have fallen, to a total of $80 billion, though Westrope says the actual number is closer to $100 billion. Also, it appears some of those cuts are being maintained even as defense funds appear to be getting added.

I wonder what CT mayors think (4.00 / 1)
You'd think they'd all be calling Lieberman's office, screaming at him for even thinking of these cuts.

Malloy? Fitch? Destefano? Time to give Joe a call and tell him you need that stimulus money.

they'd better get on the horn and start screaming (4.00 / 1)
this is really unacceptable. it's cutting funding from the very groups that need it most... and where do most advanced technologies come from? NASA. This is precisely WHERE we should be putting money to stay competative in technologies.

And CHILDRENS NUTRITION? Cutting THAT??? THAT WARRANTS A HUGE WTF???

I've seen some dumb things in Washington (4.00 / 1)
this is right up there with any of them. Scientists are understandably alarmed about Collins removing the NSF and NASA increases. As noted in an email at the bottom of that link, NSF funding is about as shovel ready as you can get. If this thing goes through, hopefully sane heads will restore the increases to education, science and all the good programs that are being targeted by Collins/Nelson/Lieberman. We can give blank checks to the assholes who ran the economy into the ground but giving funding programs that benefit regular people is too much to ask for, I guess.

Lieberman is all about Lieberman (4.00 / 2)
It's telling that Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe are the ones responsible for all the real work while Lieberman is mostly in the press talking about himself. He's a useless member in negotiations, unable to bring anything other than his own self-importance* to any debate.

* - not actually true, he brings amendments written by lobbyists for home builders and realtors to a crisis caused by a housing bubble, not content to argue over how to get to the fire, Lieberman succeeded in passing an amendment that gets to the fire with gasoline
