Did Chris Dodd Actually Agree to This?

by: CaptCT

George Bush is asking for the rest of the $700 billion bailout money, and unless Congress shows some collective spine, he's likely to get it.

From today's Washington Post:

Senior Bush administration officials, consulting with the Obama transition team, have prepared a plan to ask lawmakers for the second half of the $700 billion financial rescue package [...]

Under the emergency rescue legislation approved by Congress in October, the administration must inform lawmakers that it wants access to the second installment of $350 billion. Unless Congress passes a resolution rejecting the request within 15 days, the Treasury can begin to tap the funds. If Congress turns down the request, the president could veto the resolution and then the Treasury could proceed. The money would be blocked only if Congress overrides the veto, which would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

Why would the Democratic chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, someone who has seen the Bush Administration mismanage virtually everything it touches, agree to those kinds of conditions?

The answer to your title is YES (4.00 / 2)
The Reason is because he,and the entire Congress,  are Cowards.

The entire Leislative Branch of government has done nothing but cede its powers to the Executive for so long they know nothing else.

Bailout = Iraq (4.00 / 1)
We invaded Iraq on the pretense of weapons of mass destruction. The bailout was approved on the threat of mass destruction of our financial system. The Democrats never had the guts to stand up to Bush on Iraq, even after the pretense was discovered and the failure of the entire enterprise apparent.

Are we going to allow another $350 billion to be given to finacial institutiions with absolutely no evidence of where the first $350 billion went or how it ws used, nor any evidence whatsoever that the next $350 billion is actually needed or willl accomplish anything? It defies the imagination.

If we in Connecticut don't hold our Democratic legislators in Congress accountable, who will?

Who Are They REALLY Working For? (0.00 / 0)
.
Jon, you are right right right! And all we get are lies and propaganda... Any idea where that first 350 went? Or even where it came from (besides the paper mill and a printing press)? WTF is going on here???

If we in Connecticut don't hold our Democratic legislators in Congress accountable, who will?

But what exactly do you suggest we do? I was all set to vote for Capiello just to spite Murphy for his role in this, but cooler heads on this blog prevailed and caused me to change my mind.

In any case, this will help to explain the situation we've been forced into since at least 300 years:

Who cares? (0.00 / 0)
Congress doesn't need to do anything. In 15 days, Bush will be off clearing brush in Texas.

If the concern is... (0.00 / 0)
holding Bush accountable, then it doesn't matter.

but if the concern is holding the executive branch accountable, then it does matter.

Paulson's replacement (Geithner) has been involved from the get-go.  I see no reason to believe transparency or accountability will increase under these circumstances.

Clearing brush? (0.00 / 0)
I think not, he will be moving to his all white neighborhood very soon. His parents should be suicidal, that they raised a son who could do so much to our country.

350 Billion ready on Jan 20 (0.00 / 0)
I read in other commentary that the purpose of this request was so that the funds would be available for Obama when he takes office. This is why the O-transition was involved.
This way, no matter what diddly-dallying the Congress does, O has something to start with right away.

Oldswede is correct (0.00 / 0)
this gets Obama a little change right away instead of having to wait a few weeks, look for the Repbublicans to try to block it
