WSJ: Rep. DeLauro for Labor Secretary?

by: Ryan

Wed Dec 17, 2008 at 20:43:59 PM EST

(Interesting... - promoted by ctblogger)

The Wall Street Journal's Washington Wire is reporting that Rep. Rosa DeLauro is a top contender for Labor Secretary:

Rep. Rosa DeLauro is also a top contender in the protracted hunt for a Labor secretary and according to sources familiar with her travels, the Connecticut Democrat has traveled to Chicago.

I don't know much about Rep. DeLauro's record on labor, so I'll leave that up to y'all to discus.

UPDATE: Great catch Ryan...here's a quick rundown of her credentials.

DeLauro has been a congresswoman since 1990 and currently sits on the labor, health and human services, and education subcommittee of the appropriations committee. She's been a leader on health policy and workers' rights, sponsoring legislation to guarantee employees' sick leave and equal pay for men and women. She previously served as the executive director of EMILY's List and is the second-highest ranking woman in the House. Earlier this year, she came to the defense of New Haven labor unions, which were protesting food services giant Aramark's treatment of workers. So, while she may not be a labor insider with strong ties to Michigan and other union hubs, she's reliably progressive on the issues. "You want someone who knows how to work the Hill, and she does more so than Harley," the labor expert added. "I can see [unions] preferring to sitting down with a politician."
Everyone, please feel free to add to the mix.

UPDATE 2 Scarce: The Associated Press is now reporting it's Hilda Solis. A good to excellent choice, imo.
A labor official says Rep. Hilda Solis of California will be nominated as labor secretary by President-elect Barack Obama.
UPDATE 3 CTB: Rep DeLauro issued the following statement:
"I am honored to have been considered by President-elect Obama for Secretary of Labor. I did not seek this position, as my passion is the work I do for people in Connecticut and the changes I can bring in the U.S. Congress." "I met with President-elect Obama in Chicago this past week for 45 minutes. We had a very serious conversation about restoring protections for employees, the economic crisis and events impacting women. It further affirmed the importance of him succeeding to bring the change the country needs." "I am delighted with his choice of my friend and colleague, Congresswoman Hilda Solis. She will do an excellent job in an a department where change is sorely needed. I look forward to working with her, President-elect Obama and his entire cabinet to get this country back on track."

..is the one I'm rooting for. But as she's progressive and openly gay (as opposed to being republican-gay or not-really-talk-about-it-Janet-Napolitano-gay) her chances might be less than hoped.

Obama had been seen to be looking at Gov Sebelius and Granholm but neither seemed to want the job.

I like Mary Beth as well ... (0.00 / 0)
But that link I posted above makes me think that Shaiken is going to get it because it would fit in with the meme of the transition thus far ... someone who would bring together the principals they will deal with.

I'm rooting for Rosa! (0.00 / 0)
When it comes to the needs of working men and women, she really gets it....

But Ted Kennedy Jr, or his wife Kiki (0.00 / 0)
rumored to lay claim to the then vacant seat?

What is it with Kennedy's and their sense of entitlement?

Have they really done the work to be the next power couple from New Haven? (although Kiki is very much liked in her hometown of Branford.)

Kennedy (0.00 / 0)
When did the Kennedy family's service become a sense of "entitlement?"  All of a sudden it's become open season on Kennedys.

Promoting Rosa? (0.00 / 0)
It would open up a seat that Mayor DeStefano would nominate himself for, and we could be looking at a different New Haven. Who else would go for her seat?

I'm all for it. It's time to crack the Democratic ossification created in local offices during the past eight years because of no movement on the national front.

or even put a wrench to the escalator? (0.00 / 0)
the Peter principle is alive and well, and politics is not only not immune, but subject to its own corollary similar to "those who can, do...."

I heard a DTC member comment (during a sign pickup event in my town) that "the young ones don't want to wait their turn anymore".  All I could think of was the escalator in a department store.

I'm all for gaining experience in local office, but if it's our only source of people at midlevels of government, one thing we may be doing is  breeding is a group of people for whom the dysfunction of government is their training ground and skills development arena and then they arrive at the next step steeped in taking the dysfunction for granted and owing a bunch of people favors and payback for getting them that far, then as people move up the escalator, doesn't it get a little difficult to stick with the original idea of governing of by and for the people?

Maybe what's clogging the system is the belief that once you are in you have to ride up.  Can In and Out Burger become a political model?  Can we bring in people who haven't been changed by the ride up and infuse some new ideas and commitment and maybe even idealism at the higher levels?

All hypothetical/theoretical/conceptual.  News from the real world awaited with interest.
