Censure Vote Tonight

by: mattw

Wed Dec 17, 2008 at 00:29:44 AM EST

Tonight is the big vote at Democratic State Central regarding Joe Lieberman – there are a couple different versions of the resolution circulating (which was tabled in September), and I can confirm that the two copies I've seen both (as the Courant mentioned on Monday) lack the word "censure."

That's disappointing, especially since the content remains essentially the same (meaning that those who oppose censure will oppose this as well, but will claim vindication even if it passes) – but it does go beyond Lieberman's McCain/Palin-endorsing ways to address his ideological collapse and that his actions can't be reconciled with the Party's platform, so imo it's relatively serviceable.

So, what's left to do to ensure that this measure goes through?

  • Come to the State Central meeting tonight -- 7pm, 179 Allyn Street in Hartford. If you're on the fence about going, go -- the votes are not by roll call, so the only way to tell how the State Central reps vote is to show up and watch them. If you can adopt a district or two of State Central reps and report back here after the vote, make a note in comments.
  • If you can't come, don't hesitate to contact your State Central Representative to let them know what you think. (If you don't know which district you live in, check this page for your town and look up your State Senate district.)
  • Vote in the WFP survey on the Lieberman censure.

Now, a word about that last one -- if you visit, it's a pretty straight-up list-building page of the sort MoveOn routinely does, and they pointedly offer both perspectives so they're aren't staking a claim on either side of the issue. And one might ask why WFP is concerning themselves with a Democratic Party resolution at all.

Of course, WFP is going to be involved in the 2012 season, and to have the knowledge that your email list was (or was not) actively interested in Lieberman's status has to play a meaningful role in your planning down the road. That said, I'm really posting it because, frankly, it's internet organizing 101 and the Democratic Party in CT ought to be doing it – but if the WFP wants to sweep in and eat their lunch, then to the better-organized go the spoils.

In a roundabout way, this highlights the major shift that a successful vote tonight would reflect. It's important to signal that Lieberman is not welcome to run under our banner again, but for a long time, there seems to have been a consensus that the state party acts as an adjunct to elected officials, rather than being a year-round organizational and media force from which candidates at all levels benefit.

The real impact of a censure resolution would be to assert that it's not Joe Lieberman's world -- it's our world, and that he just lives in it. It's easy for new activists (like me) to demand things from Senators and Congressmen, but people on State Central aren't accustomed to dictating terms to wayward Democrats. This has been a competitive state in the past, but as we slide further towards solid-blue status, we need to make sure that accountability is built into what we do if we're going to have meaningful quality control over who's representing us.

I heard that Middletown's Dan Russo and his wife Judy (0.00 / 0)
are going to put forward a counter-resolution that Lieberman be re-installed as a Democrat in good standing, and that his picture be hung once again on the wall of State Central between Dodd and Blumenthal.

Pee or get off the pot (4.00 / 1)
I hope that both proposals are voted on and that video is taken to understand who stands where.

There's no point thrashing around for support if it doesn't exist, and there's no point watering down your statement if you think Joe is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

A lot of people in the Democratic party thought that a vote for Barack Obama was a vote against what Joe Lieberman was campaigning for.  As a Democrat, when I receive a request for funding from my DTC or from State Central, I'd like to know where it is going to go and what they will be doing with their energies.

I would view it as delusional or perhaps sycophantic to ignore what he has done and vote to reinstate him, but nevertheless:  I do want to know if our state party is filled with delusional, sycophantic people who would vote for the Russo statement (and I hope they enjoy their free dinner from Joe afterwards for their help and support).

Naturally, the Russos are going to frame their nonsense as if it is a vote in favor of our President-elect.  A vote to censure Lieberman is not a vote AGAINST anything or anyone -- it is taking a stand about unacceptable actions.

So bring on the counterproposal, and let's see a vote on both.  IF the room is filled with abstentions, then whatever it is......the DSCC is also dysfunctional.

I plan on going. Anyone else? (4.00 / 1)

i think  Joe  should be censured and I  for one an disappointed  that the censure resolution is not being brought  forward.

Remember that the Greenwich DTC stood up for censure (4.00 / 1)
We didn't pull our punches.  We voted to censure him, to demand that he resign from the Democratic Party, and for good measure we voted to send a letter to the Democratic leadership in the U.S. Senate criticizing them for granting Lieberman a committee chairmanship.

Once again, Greenwich Democrats stood up against Joe Lieberman and for Ned Lamont.

Central needs to stand up for Democrats (4.00 / 1)
State central committee members need to be reminded that Joe Lieberman is despised by all but 20% of Democrats in this state.  We threw him out in August 2006; we voted against him by an even larger margin in the general election; his approval ratings are miserable; and he did everything he could to defeat Democratic candidates and Democratic ideals this year.  So a vote against censure is a slap in the face of the overwhelming majority of Democrats in the Constitution State.

Nancy DiNardo, don't you dare put Lieberman's portrait back up.  Don't you dare!

Lieberman's portrait... (4.00 / 1)
That will never happen. It will never go up again...

Whatever the language, a statement repudiating Lieberman is needed (0.00 / 0)
Politics that produces change, we now know, happens from the bottom-up not top-down -- it's the grassroots and it's ability to organize and expand it's own influence that Democrats in Connecticut now must grasp, and soundly.

Rejecting Lieberman -- be it censure, repudiation, or other clear language -- as Connecticut Democrats will send a signal that this is our party now.  We beat Lieberman's Republican choice for President in this state by 23 points! State Central Committee needs to reflect that reality.

Moreover, the statement would rightly be perceived as making it increasingly impossible for Lieberman to seek reelection in a Democratic primary in 2012.  If he wants to run CFL again, fine.  I hope he does.

a letter of "extreme displeasure" is apparently what State Central Committee will send Lieberman (0.00 / 0)
