Harry Reid Shills For Lieberman

by: BranfordBoy

Tue May 02, 2006 at 15:10:16 PM EDT

Back in December, Senate Dem Leader Harry Reid had this to say about Joe Lieberman:  “I’ve spoken to Joe Lieberman and he knows he’s out there alone. I mean, literally alone. Joe is a fine man, he has strong feelings, but he’s just alone. Even Republicans don’t agree with Joe.”

Now he's letting Joe feel the love. Read and weep.

BranfordBoy :: Harry Reid Shills For Lieberman
Received by delegates to the CT Dem State Convention.

I write to urge you to support my friend, Joe Lieberman, when you convene with your fellow delegates on May 20th, and then when you cast your vote in the August 8th primary.

I know that there's been a lot of discussion among you and your fellow Democrats about Joe, and I'd like to share my thoughts with you. Let me be clear: as the leader of the Democratic Party in the United States Senate, I need Joe to be reelected. We have many battles in the future and his presence in the United States Senate is essential.

Your faithful transcriber pauses to hurl. "Battles"??? WTF? Is he talking about Iraq? There sure as hell will be plenty more battles there if Joe has his way. But I digress.

Very few people I've known in my lifetime are as principled and decent as Joe Lieberman.

A little violin music, Maestro, if you please.

I don't agree on every position he takes, but he has an unquestionable commitment to the progressive principles that make our Party great. Joe has dedicated his career to advancing a progressive Democratic agenda and has told me time and time again of how proud he is of his Democratic Party affiliation.

Clearly, words speak louder than actions -- just the opposite of what that stupid old saying has led people to believe for the last several millennia or so.

As Democrats, we represent people from all walks of life and points of view. It's that diversity that's our strength. Unlike the Republicans, we don't always march in lockstep with each other.

A strategy that has resulted in a string of electoral victories, he might have added. Oh, wait ...

But that's a good thing. Why? Because our Party's diversity reflects the diversity of the American people. We're not the party of the privileged few.

'Scuse me, bucket time again. Whew, thank God we've got good ole Shoeless Joe Lieberman in the party, reminding us of our humble, shit-kicking roots.

I can always count on Joe when our Party needs to stand up to the Republican Party.

Holy crap! Not sure I'll be able to make ... it ... through.

Recently, a non-partisan Washington, D.C.-based publication -- Congressional Quarterly -- released its rankings. It ranked me as voting with the Democratic Party 90% of the time. Joe? 90% of the time. So yes, Joe's been there with me, and now we need to be there for him. The United States needs his continued presence in the Senate, so we can work together for a better America.

A better America that will continue bleeding in Iraq for the foreseeable future, I suppose he means.

This could be a historic year for Democrats. The complete failures of the Republicans in Washington have made America less safe, less secure, and less competitive than ever before.

And Joe Lieberman has been complicit in letting this happen. Remember that 10% of votes you mentioned, Harry? Like a penis, it's not the size that matters, it's how you use it.

Now for the rousing finish (emphasis in the original):

If I could vote at your Convention, I would proudly cast my vote for Joe Lieberman -- knowing that my vote would be cast for a good man, for a committed Democrat, and for someone who has devoted his life to good, principled government.

Backs have been scratched. Favors have been made. Chits have been called in. Deals have been made. Quids have been pro quo-ed. And the hope that Democratic Party in Washington might actually stand up and grow some balls has dimmed yet again.

Update: From the comments If you'd like to call, the correct place  is Reid's campaign  office. The number there is 202.544.5632.

The Senate Minority Leader knows more about what goes on in  the Senate than you do.

I'm sure he does (0.00 / 0)
And I pity the fool.

right (0.00 / 0)
that's why when he found out that the President of the United States violated the law and ignored FISA and stated that he would continue to ignore the law the Senate Minority leader stood up and sai8d "Impeach the bastard!".

Opps, sorry, that wasn't what he said at all.

He's an enabler. He won't even support censure. He wouldn't support a filibuster against right wing radical judges. Let's be clear on this. The two good things he has done were stand up against the GOPs attempt to get rid of the New Deal and ... I'm thinking, there has to have been a second one...

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.

Not so fast Harry (0.00 / 0)
In addition to flaming about this, I hope you'll all take a little direct action.  Make it specific.  The following communique is now circulating amongst my co-conspirators:
_____________________________________
Today I got another mailing from the Lieberman campaign, this one with a copy of a letter from Senator Harry Reid (our intrepid Minority Leader) urging me to cast my convention vote (and primary vote) for Joe Lieberman.  Fat chance, but I did see this as an opportunity.

I like and respect Harry Reid.  There are a number of things I  don't agree with him about, but over the last year and a half he's shown himself  to be a good, loyal fighting Democrat.  Sure I'd love to see every Senate Dem  a Russ Feingold  or a Barbara Boxer, but even if we traded in every Diane  Feinstein for a Harry Reid our nation and our party would be enormously better off.

In any event, I decided to give Harry Reid's office a call and  give him some feedback, since he's decided to weigh in on Connecticut  politics.  I could have ticked off the many many reasons why Joe Lieberman is wrong for  the party, wrong for Connecticut and wrong for America, but I didn't think  that would be terribly effective.  So I decided to push one specific angle:  shutting down Lieberman's spoiler run talk.

Reid's letter, after all, tries to make the case that Joe is a  loyal Democrat right there by his side on Capitol Hill.  Rather than dive into  the intricacies of his voting record, I pointed out the 800-pound gorilla:  Joe  Lieberman has threatened to run as a a spoiler if he doesn't win the primary.  I've talked to some of my fellow convention delegates who plan to vote for  Lieberman on the 20th, and some of them have made an important point to me:  the  only time we lose that seat is when we split the vote.  They're right, just  look at the history for the past couple decades.  Of course the Republicans  haven't even identified a credible candidate yet.  The only way they have a  prayer of winning is if one of our guys is a sore loser and runs in the  general as an independent.  Ned Lamont has pledged not to do this, and to  support Senator Lieberman if he wins the primary.  Joe Lieberman won't do the  same.  I just don't see how that's acceptable behavior for a candidate for the  Democratic nomination.  Personally I react very negatively to threats, and  I think it hurts Lieberman's support overall, but there are people who will  be cowed by it.  But it shouldn't even be on the table, and I think we  should encourage our national leadership to get Joe to repudiate that threat.

Bottom line: after explaining how we want and need the primary  here (for the gubernatorial race at least) in CT, I asked Senator Reid to  withhold his support for Joe Lieberman until Joe pledges not to run as a  spoiler.

If you'd like to call, the correct place  is Reid's campaign  office. The number there is 202.544.5632.  I talked to a nice lady named Sheila,  who is from Waterbury as it turns out, so she knew what I was talking about  with regard to CT politics. I encourage you to call or write or fax, or better  yet get some friends from other parts of CT to weigh in. Even if they haven't  made up their mind about Lamont, I think we can agree that Democratic  candidates should respect the choice of the primary voters and not try to sabotage  our chances by splitting the vote.

If you can think of others to call, such as Dr Dean (our party  chairman) or Senator Schumer (head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign  Committee), have at it and let me know how it goes.

do this (4.00 / 1)
it's the best defense.

Call the DSCC
Call the DNC
Call the DLC
Call the Minority Leader

Promise to vote for and provide support for Lamont (not on any other issue than his respect for the Democratic Party process). That you won't even consider Lieberman because he has refused to let the people determine who they want for the seat and has not ruled out a spoiler run against the party selected candidate.

Make clear that you won't even consider him as a candidate unless he can make that commitment. Unless he does, he is NOT a Democrat.

Be firm. Be strong. Be clear. You are either in the party or out of it, and as of right now Lieberman's position is OUT of it.

The question is not what you are, we already determined that, we are now negotiating price.
