Seeing the Writing on the Wall, Lieberman Starts Talking Up "Respect" For Obama

(Joementum! - promoted by ctblogger)

The Washington Monthly Saturday reports that Joe Lieberman is starting to try to rewrite history as he begins to backtrack on his criticism of his party's nominee, Barack Obama. Steve Benen in his Political Animal column says:

LIEBERMAN HASN'T BEEN PAYING ATTENTION TO HIMSELF.... Joe Lieberman adopted the role of Republican attack dog early on, but as the election draws near, he's hoping the political world has a very short memory.

Lieberman, a self-proclaimed "independent Democrat" who was chosen by McCain to make the case against Obama at the Republican National Convention in early September, said his comments have been within bounds.

"When I go out, I say, 'I have a lot of respect for Sen. Obama. He's bright. He's eloquent.'"

My hunch is, Lieberman sees the direction of the political winds, and hopes to convince Democrats that while he's been a McCain sycophant, he's always been "respectful" towards Obama.

Lieberman, in other words, has to hope Democrats haven't been paying any attention at all. The party is supposed to forget, for example, when Lieberman argued that Obama doesn't put "country first."

And the time Lieberman said it was a "good question" to ask whether Obama is a "Marxist."

And the time Lieberman ironically accused the Obama campaign of "sleazy tactics."

And the time Lieberman, at the Republican National Convention, falsely accused Obama of trying to undermine the troops

"Respectful"? Nice try, Joe.

The article is here. The comments alone are worth the visit!
UPDATE ctblogger: Last night, Keith Olbermann calls out Lieberman for his new fond "respect" for Obama.

We will not forget. That's a promise. (0.00 / 0)

LOOK (0.00 / 0)
Joe Lieberman will be a Senator until 2012.If President Obama shows he's bigger and better than Joe Lieberman by NOT ATTACKING him but instead getting his vote on important issues I'm fine with that andI hope everyone here is too.

"Getting even" or "punishing" Lieberman is not goimg to be on President Obamas List of important things needed to get done and it shouldn't be.Getting President Obama policies is.

I think Liebermans Chairmanship should be stripped and it should be made clear he is NOT WELCOME at the caucus meetings. He chose to be "INDEPENDENT"and the Democratic Senate Leadership  should insist he be that.

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
I don't expect President Obama to say anything about Lieberman.  I do expect Lieberman to jump ship right after the election and go Republican before he is stripped of his committee chairmanship.  And I expect Lieberman to cause trouble for the Democrats and for President Obama.  Why?  Because that is the kind of guy Lieberman is.

Don't bet on it (0.00 / 0)
I expect Lieberman to do whats in the best interest of Lieberman.Thats what he's always done.He always sucks up to power.

I think you're going to be suprised just how conciliatory both he and McCain will be. McCain getting TROUNCED means the Republican Party will  have little use for either Joe or John. The Republican base will demand a further move to the right and an excommunication of "RINOs" like McCain and his sidekick.Noone on either side of the aisle will want to work with either of these toxins which leaves them wide open for use by  President Obama.

I think he's so petty that he'll undercut the Dems (0.00 / 0)
Let's recall that this is the guy who's been praised by William F. Buckley, Jr., David Brooks, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Ann Coulter.  He's one of them, and he'll do everything he can to keep on their good side.  If his ego is about to take a hit from the loss of seniority, I think he'll jump to the GOP.

He's too petty to try to stay with the Dems and eat crow.  That's my guess.

Joe will undermine progressive policies ... (0.00 / 0)
... whenever he gets the chance.

He'll go on TV to bitch about any real attempt at health care reform or any real attempt at getting a good energy bill passed, not the bogus energy bill he introduced with John Warner. Joe will undermine attempts at financial industry regulations. He'll water down bills when he can.

Lieberman's a corporatist and a neocon, and he can't be trusted. If I were Obama, I'd be wary of him.

The groveling that Joe is doing now is his weak attempt to stay relevant.

All of These Comments Have Some Truth In Them. (0.00 / 0)
Lieberman is as narcissistic as they come. Everything he does comes down to one thing: What seems good for Joe. Whether or not he is useful at various times for specific reasons, he is NOT TO BE TRUSTED. EVER.  Fortunately, there  no longer is a need to worry that he might sell his mother for the Brooklyn Bridge as she died recently. He's a disgrace.

That said, Obama is wise and cool. He will handle Joe just fine.  It's the rest of us who need to be restrained, as it is admittedly difficult to be polite to a liar and a Benedict Arnold.
