Signs of Desperation

by: CaptCT

Wed Oct 08, 2008 at 12:34:11 PM EDT

The latest sign that Republicans are feeling vulnerable this election year: They've resorted to vandalizing and stealing lawn signs.
Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

From the Westport News:

Political campaign yard signs for Democratic candidates were vandalized over the weekend. The signs for Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and Jim Himes were crossed off with red paint, while nearby signs for Republican candidates were left untouched.

Going out with a can of paint and defacing private property -- isn't that the kind of inner-city crime that Republicans always seem to be complaining about? Now, these supporters of Chris Shays and John McCain have become petty criminals. I bet this went over well in Westport.

If you notice someone, messing with a lawn sign, get the license plate number of the offender and call your local police department. Because it's against the law:

Although the plastic signs are worth very little in a financial sense, defacing or removing them is technically third-degree criminal mischief. Under Connecticut law, this is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

My lawn signs have been stolen twice... (0.00 / 0)
... and I just replace them.

Cops stealing Election Signs (0.00 / 1)
Cops came to my friend's house in Enfield, CT.

Enfield Cops confiscated his sign and left the ones for the other candidate nearby. Police returned the signs they illegally confiscated after he contacted me and his lawyer.

it's a theme this year (0.00 / 0)

h/t to TNC from the Atlantic.

I was thinking of doing a post with the above lawn sign pic combined with the confederate flag that's up at my neighbor's house and the swastika painted on the pavement across the street from an Obama sign.

Signs of desperation, yes, but also signs of the times. As TNC said it:

These are not people just posting anonymously in internet forums--these are people who literally believe Obama is a terrorist and showing up at rallies. These guys [the McCain campaign] need to watch what they say. Somewhere, slumbering in this country, there are men who aren't clued in that this whole "terrorist" thing is mere strategy. They have guns, and all their lives they've wanted to be famous. Don't give them a reason. This is still America. We are never that far from the past.

As an aside (0.00 / 0)
The signs cost $1.50 apiece, and I bet that whoever did this vandalizing hit enough to rack up a more significant punishment -- though are they on the hook for up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine for each sign?

Actually... (0.00 / 0)
...if you buy them in small lots from the Obama website, they cost $8 ea.; I'd call that the fair market value. That gets the cumulative value to felony levels much quicker.

Rethuglicans have resorted to keying cars (0.00 / 0)
There was a post in Dkos which pointed this out. And, it happened to someone else I knew. McCain supporters are not only bigoted, they are felonious.

Careful! (0.00 / 0)
If you notice someone, messing with a lawn sign, get the license plate number of the offender and call your local police department.

Make sure the folks you report are truly messing with signs, rather than delivering/installing them in locations where they've been requested, as I was earlier this evening. Don't want to put any of the faithful behind bars accidentally.

Democrats, Stop Stealing the Signs (4.00 / 1)
I rubbed a number of signs I put out with poison ivy.  So Democrats, stop stealing the signs.

I Think the Shrinks Call This Projection (0.00 / 0)
And speaking of desperation, it's been a real hoot listening to the right-wing talk radio shows the last couple of days, too. Laura Ingrham, Shawn Hannity, Howie Carr (it's a Cape Cod station), and especially Rush Limbaugh have been the source of non-stop entertainment. My sides hurt from laughing so much.

2006 (0.00 / 0)
This happened in 2006 too. All the Chris Murphy signs in his neighborhood here in Cheshire were torn up and littered all over the lawns of his supporters.

Strangely the Nancy Johnson signs were untouched.

They also ripped up my Ned Lamont sign, the bastards.

Bizarrely... (0.00 / 0)
...I seem to have been the subject of a sort of reverse "vandalism": Instead of stealing my Obama sign, somebody (apparently sometime last night) added an additional Obama sign to my yard! I'm frankly mystified...

haha (0.00 / 0)
I did this today to somebody in my town.
