CT-04: Primary Day Open Thread

by: tparty

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 08:01:37 AM EDT

(Bumped this up ... Polls close in less than four hours...  be sure to vote ... and let us know what's going on in your district. - promoted by CaptCT)

Jim Himes votes on Primary Day

(Jim, Mary, Emma, and Linley Himes voting this morning.)

It's finally here - primary day.

Polls have been open for just about two hours now. Here's Emma and Linley helping Jim fill out his ballot early this morning (according to the workers at their polling place, at about 6:20am Mary and Jim were the 7th and 8th people to vote):

And here's an iPhone pic of the ballot that a supporter sent in about 20 minutes ago - filling out a bubble may not be as satisfying as pulling the old levers, but today, it seems pretty satisfying:

More photos at Flickr. The Greenwich Time reports this morning that "light turnout" is expected throughout the district - which mean every single vote will count! Polls are open until 8PM tonight. To find your polling place and remind your friends to vote, check out our primary info center page at: www.himesforcongress.com/primary

And continue to check the blog at www.himesforcongress.com/blog throughout the day for updates.

What's going on at your polling place? Leave your reports from the field in the comments below, or email us at blog-at-himesforcongress.com

Our fundraising deadline is midnight tonight. Help us have the resources we need to beat Chris Shays only 12 weeks from today:

Primary Day: Scenes from Bridgeport HQ

Here's the scene in the Bridgeport HQ at around noon today - staff, volunteers, and supporters hitting the phones to get out the vote for Jim!

Update 2 (0.00 / 0)

Primary Day: Update From Bridgeport HQ:

Fire trucks at McLevy Hall

(Fire trucks at McLevy Hall across from Himes Campaign HQ, Tuesday August 12th, 2pm)

A chorus of emergency sirens just flooded downtown Bridgeport as fire trucks responded to an apparent fire at McLevy Hall, right across the street from our campaign headquarters.

In other, only slightly less chaotic primary day news:

- Todd Beeton blogs at MyDD about today's primary:

First of all, this primary is going to be an extremely low turnout
election, so nothing can be taken for granted. But also, this primary
is an opportunity. The more people who do turn out for Jim today, the
bigger a warning shot he can deliver to Shays. It's also an chance to
raise Jim's profile in the district. All today, Jim will be greeting
voters at various voting locations throughout the district (you can see
the schedule HERE)
and he'll be joining supporters at a results watching party tonight at
The Black Bear Saloon in Norwalk after polls close at 8pm.

- DKos diarist "lindsay in 72" blogs about voting this morning:

I fervently believe that a massive victory is necessary as a
springboard to November in order to neutralize the ability for the
Shays camp to use the primary as a campaigning tool. This is not in the
least impossible, given the nature of the match-up, but perhaps
difficult, given that enough people will not take Himes' opponent
seriously and a traditionally low-turnout event could be even lower.

So please please please PLEASE get out there and vote....

- 4th Street News, the Bridgeport Banner, and Jon at My Left Nutmeg all have posts on what Jim's primary opponent is up to today.

Keep it going: Get out the vote.

News flash!!! Whitnum sighting! (0.00 / 0)
News at 11! What to my wondering eyes should appear but a blond-headed ditz darting in and out of traffic at the southbound exit for the Trumbull Mall on the Merritt at around 1:30 pm. I kid you not. Ms. Whitnum was scampering from car to car handing out something to the hapless drivers stopped at the light. I wish I had a camera.

Lots of Non-4th District Residents (0.00 / 0)
go to the Trumbull Mall.  Probably a complete waste of time.

Jim Himes captures 92% of the vote (0.00 / 0)
U.S. House District 4 - DEM
98 of 125 precincts - 78 percent

(X) Jim Himes 8,602 - 92 percent
Lee Whitnum 795 - 8 percent

Lee Whitnum was spotted earlier today literally begging for votes in Trumbull, as cars whizzed by. About 1/6 of her votes were from there.
