Fairfield Weekly publishes Sarah Littman's version of her firing

by: Scarce

Wed Jul 30, 2008 at 13:59:23 PM EDT

"I think it was a long time coming," says Littman, an author of books for teens. "The atmosphere of the paper has changed since it was taken over by MediaNews. It's more conservative." The 40-paper chain operates Greenwich Time and its sister paper the Stamford Advocate. (More disclosure: When Littman started writing for Greenwich Time in 2002, it was owned by the Tribune Company, which owns the Weekly.) Though she didn't exclusively write about politics in her bi-weekly bit of space, Littman was the only dyed-in-the-wool liberal on the op-ed page.

Littman says she doesn't see how editors "could have not known" that last September she hosted a "friend-raiser," where Himes introduced himself to potential supporters. She says she's given about $700 to Himes in donations and the cost of the event. "It's something that Lee Whitnum brought up to them," she says. It was mentioned in an email exchange between Littman and political reporter Neil Vigdor. And bad blood between Whitnum and bloggers is no secret; she's mentioned Littman, the event and her position at Greenwich Time on her campaign website. Littman believes the paper may have been giving her enough rope to hang herself when they published the column without inserting or asking for a disclosure note.

"It may have been naive of me not to put something in [the column] that I gave to the Himes campaign," she contends. "But the point was not 'vote for Jim Himes,' it was to point out the dangerous ideas [Whitnum] was spreading."

Bite me, Dave (0.00 / 0)
Dear Sirs,

Greenwich has been my home for over 45 years, so I'm familiar with the community. My son was mentioned twice in Pyke Johnson's column, and my mother (who is a member of the Greenwich Pen Women) still keeps up with his wife Lucy. I've been associated with a private school in town for 20 years. Our family and Greenwich are intertwined .

Although I've moved, one of the joys of life is to read Sara Littman's column. It reminds me of Greenwich's rich Democratic history, and Sara is always cutting edge and entertaining.

What a shock to find out that Sara has been let go - and over a column in which she took Lee Whitnum to task. Lee is one of the worst candidates ever to run in any town, in any race. Sara Littman writes an opinion column, but when she wrote about Lee it wasn't opinion, it was based on Lee's outrageous factual statements and antics.

I'm surprised that Sara could be fired for writing this column, or any column.  Wasn't she was hired to write opinion in the first place? Your decision has mystified me by it's inanity and total disrespect for the Democrats in Greenwich.

Dear Sue,

Thanks for your note. Sarah had, and has, many fans. The reasons for our decision are really between her and us. I hope you'll respect that.

But thank you for the note, and the obvious passion you bring to the subject.

David Warner

WTF does THAT mean!?! (0.00 / 0)
"The reasons for our decision are really between her and us. I hope you'll respect that."

The public firing of a well-liked opinion columnist for dubious reasons is obviously a matter of record, especially since the columnist in question is making public statements about the situation.  The ONLY reason Dave wants it kept between "her and us" is to save the Greenwich Time and their management from public embarrassment and being exposed as a partisan Republican rag.

The only way I'd ever buy a copy of the Time now is if there was a sudden widespread shortage of toilet paper.

You know what, Dave?  You lost any justification to ask for "respect" when the paper made this this ugly and unfair move.  We DON'T respect that.

How ridiculous of David Warner!! (0.00 / 0)
GT's editor David Warner stonewalls by suggesting that the matter is "between Sarah and the paper".  Like Hell it is!!  This is a political firing- pure and simple.  The paper is dishonestly using the pretext of Sarah's hosting a "meet-and-greet" for Jim Himes to sugges that she's compromised the integrity of the newspaper.  Now if Sarah Littman really did compromise the paper's integrity, I should think that management would be blaring it from the rooftops, and patting themselves on the back for standing up for ethical journalism.  Of course, that's not the case at all, and that's why Warner and Zebora and Dunster are stonewalling, not telling readers that she's gone, and maintaining her column and photo on their columnists page online.

No, the paper could never fire her for holding a "friend-raiser" for Himes, nor for contributing to his campaign, because for many years they published religiously the column of William F. Buckley, Jr., the father of modern conservatism, and a major contributor to Republican candidates and the Republican Party.  If GT/Advocate's management suggest that they didn't know, they're guilty of the greatest ineptitude in policing their stable of columnists.  More likely, they knew all too well, but didn't think anything of it.  It was only when they wanted a pretext to get rid of Sarah Littman that they roled out that absurd rationale.  And let's keep in mind that Sarah's column frequently appeared on the same day and the same page as WFB's essay.

This was a set-up, and publisher John Dunster admitted as much weeks before when, to a right-winger complaining about "liberal" columnist Littman, Dunster stated that he was going to change the opinion pages.  And when Sarah exposed GT/Advocate's bizarrely favorable coverage of Lee Whitnum and told the truth about her weird behavior and extreme views, in the process really showing up their political reporter Neil Vigdor, they pounced.

They know full well that Sarah Littman never compromised the papers, that she should not be held to the standards of a reporter who is supposed to be objective, and especially when they had never held WFB to that standard before he died.  This was a group of right-wing journalists getting rid of a courageous progressive woman's voice because they simply don't like her politics.

And the fact that they refuse to tell the truth, even to repeating their pathetic excuse for the firing to their readers, belies their real motivation.

But one thing is clear: it's far from over!!

BTW, Sara, if you're here (0.00 / 0)
my mother (a Greenwich Pen Woman member and their National Treasurer) said she wanted to sponsor you for the organization. She mentioned something about your integrity and vision and how much you would to the meetings.

I'd be honored to be a Greenwich Pen woman (0.00 / 0)
I noted with complete fangirlness that author Rosemary Wells is a member!
